Ok, so when you go to the calendar what is the different between like intro, progressive, intro star, amateur, advanced, elite, elite 1, elite 2, elite 3 and special? just out of interest! :) im new to all this affiliated stuff and couldnt find anything helpful on the website!

I don't know them all but progressive I think is just BN/disc/newc/fox and amateur has the amateur classes from 90upwards which are opens

Intro often has some smaller classes than BN such as 80 open

Tells you what height classes to expect. Intro usually 70cm-1m, progressive Brit nov to fox, lots will be AP (advanced progressive) meaning they run Brit nov to fox plus advanced which I think is up to 1.40 open- or used to be! Hope that helps :)

SnowGoose and Kirsty+Java thanks that's helpful :) and SillySausage yeah sort of what height to expect per category so like is elite all the top riders? And I've jumped some progressive single phase discovery's and the spreads ranged from 105 - 1m20??!? Luckily have a brave mare so I wondered if progressive meant it just got bigger progressively in the jump off?

A class is the individual course of fences. The maximum dimensions of fences for each class will be in the rule book, it will depend on the course builder, arena, conditions etc whether they are built up to max dimensions. The category is a group of classes and is named more for the stage of training rather than the dimensions of the courses themselves. So if you are an amateur rider targeting amateur classes you would choose an amateur show. If you are new to the sport you may want small introductory classes so would go to an intro show. If you have a horse that you are hoping to progress though the basic classes (BN-fox) you would choose a progressive. Once you have progressed through these stages you would choose an advanced and as you say elite would be top level competition.
