Hiii - newbie here usually I’m a lurker and come to the forum for searching information or just read through threads...
However, I thought I’d ask some advice and gauge all your thoughts on something :)
I’m searching for a new team member to join our gang - a section D but I’m very picky.. I’d like a something that’s ready to go ideally with quality and straight limbs that moves well - not asking for much I know!
In the current climate how much would you say I need to set aside budget wise?
I have been offered one that’s won top level stuff showing but also is an alrounder and seems sensible and safe - recently passed a 5 stage vetting so any ideas on this would be brill???
thank you in advance and apologies for the waffle ☺️☺️

Prices are mad at the moment, I saw a D advertised that would fit your bill (though not really a show ‘type’ to my eyes, and it was apparently slightly quirky) for £10k and it was marked as sold the next day.
Unbroken/unhandled youngsters that would have struggled to reach £1500 in previous years are now going for 3-4K very quickly.

If you want to buy something quickly I’d not expect much left from 8k. If you‘re happy to wait for months then 5-6k.

Edit: funnily I've just seen someone getting absolutely slated on FB for looking for an unbroken youngster with a budget of 5k. Apparently that doesn't even get you something that will pass a 5 stage with xrays these days!

When you say ready to go, what do you want him/her to be ready for? Are you talking hacking out nicely and doing a bit of local competing or HOYS showing /BE / BD/BS (and at what level?) Do you want a youngish one or an older schoolmaster type?

I paid £8k for a nice but green 6 yr old riding club allrounder last August. Prices seem to have gone up again since then. A friend recently sold her county show winning 7 yr old Sec D, who is winning at Elem BD and will jump a course of show jumps (she's not into jumping so hasn't done much with him but he can and will do it) for somewhere around the mid-teens (I don't know the exact price, just the ball park). I believe he's gone to quite a serious dressage home.

Sorry when I say up and running I mean schooled fairly nicely (happy to put work in myself as usually I buy youngsters and do myself but I’m expecting and due in may so would prefer something ready done and seen a bit of the world) but ideally no older than 8!
I’d like something to show and do some dressage on but realistically that will be next years aim so this year I’d like something my sister can tick over until I’m ready to ride and then get out hacking, beach and farm rides and enjoy at home this season.

I viewed a rising 4 yr old this weekend, but got there to find he had a splint that hadn’t been disclosed and he was 9500 so was slightly disappointed - not done much and needed bringing back into work but had done a couple of shows Inhand as 2 yr old and was well handled.

I think you'd get what you want for around the £8-10k mark the way prices are at the moment. The one you've been offered might be justifiably a bit more than that if he has a good record so I suppose it's up to you whether you want to pay for that record or go for something that's not quite so proven.

For something with some quality, cleanish vetting, that’s had some good schooling and will be competitive beyond local level you are probably talking 10-12k.

But I’d also hope to find something that is nice but a bit rough around the edges that can quickly be corrected for around 6k
