Hi all

This being my first winter with Bess I need a bit of advice.

She is getting a chaser clip on Saturday as she is already extremely hairy and sweating so much even with a lightest exercise.

So do I need to rug?

She is stabled and goes out most days for a few hours into a field.

I know I am probably asking the most numpty of questions but as I said I am new and all advice is really welcome.

By the way her coat is extremely thick and last year they did a bib clip on her and did not rug her at all. They said she was fine this way however she was a little underweight when I bought her (although they claim this was due to some neglect by previous owner).

Thanks in advance for your advice.

It doesn't sound like you'll need to rug her just yet, not until it gets a bit colder...it's still pretty mild at the moment (well...it is here in Leics!). If it's raining and windy you might want to put a LW on her.

My cob has a blanket clip, is out naked all day, and wears a LW rug at night because he's out, but if he was stabled he'd be naked.

I'm thinking of trace clipping mine soon, but she's going to be out 24/7, so am hoping to leave her naked during the day and just a LW on a night. She has a medium weight rug but I'll leave that off as long as possible into the winter.

Thanks for that guys. I will leave her naked for now and just keep an eye on her. Has taken me since May to get her topline back up and she now has a lovely rounded bum compared to the sloping one she had before.

I love my little hairy coblet!

Nah I would leave her naked. Genie's had a hunter clip and is naked in the day, and out in a lightweight turnout rug at night, which she is warm in.

Just watch out as the weather is due to turn a lot colder in the next few days. Well it is in Scotland, not sure about Doncaster way. She may need a lightwieght during day if it gets cold, wet and windy. The weather you guys have been having recently she def wouldn't need a rug with a light clip.

My sec D is hunter clipped and has been sweating under a v thin stable rug! I have resorted to a thermatex as don't want to leave him naked overnight, the temperatures are too unpredictable.

He's been naked during the day though, the weather has been good.
