OK, so we are now moving on to getting a good basis for ready for flying changes. We have a lovely half pass, traver and counter canter. Though I find it more difficult to maintain a nice counter canter on the right rein. The problem I have however is that I cannot get a transition on this rein (along a wall side) without him swinging his bum in and then setting off on his right leg. We can get the transition without any problem across the diagonal and down the centre line (he is not predicting or assuming anything then).

I know that it must be something I am doing as he can do this with another rider on board and there is no difference with how easy they find each rein. So can anyone tell me where the weak point is - I am assuming it is lack of support from my right side (bad hip and bust elbow on this side). And also anything I could practice to try and improve this problem, beyond just more physio sessions on me!!...

when doing counter canter make sure you can get both bends, he might be turning his bum in because you have got the "correct" bend and he isnt balanced so turning his bum in, get him bending both ways (flexing) as you counter canter and straightness is the key for a good flying change and and uphill canter.
