One of my rotties has taken a chunk out of his front pad and he is making a real drama out of it - he has refused to go out for his morning walk for the last 2 mornings and has stayed lying on my bed looking very sorry for himself

It's a wound about the size of my little fingernail, round in shape and not particularly deep, however due to the constant licking it's now very pink. I vet wrapped it yesterday afternoon and once he was out and about with it padded it didn't trouble him too much. I've done the same again this afternoon but I'm wondering whether to leave it on now he's indoors again or take it off.

If I take it off he is constantly licking it but if I leave it wrapped it's not getting any air to it. What would you suggest to help it heal?

Thank you

Mine took skin off her pads years ago on hot concrete (remember when summers were hot). Anyway, When I took her to the vet they cleaned them and dressed them with padding and cotton wool and vet wrap and she had to keep those on for a week! When They came off new pink pads had formed and I had to rub some cream in every day for another week while they firmed up.

Does that help at all?

Maybe I am a tough mammy but I don't wrap....my young dog has cut his pads approx three times since last year (likes to fight with thorn bushes, also lots of twonks down at the beach like to leave smashed glass everywhere) and is a bit of a drama queen but I do not indulge him...that is the road to hell for me!. He was walked on grass and luckily the time before last the snow was pretty deep so that was helpful.

You can bathe in an old Chinese takeaway tray full of dilute disinfectant but my favourite invention is spray disinfectant and spray plaster...disinfectant to clean the wound, plaster as a barrier, very quick, no conflict, not nice to lick and any time he did lick he got a verbal correction and distraction with a ball or toy.

Thank you guys, I have to say my initial reaction is not to wrap it & just let him get on with it but after 2 days of drama I'm struggling to give him any sympathy.

I didn't know about the spray plasters CaveCanem so I will definately look for something like that which will cover it and prevent licking. When I got home this morning after walking the other one he had been licking it so much he had soaked a patch about 2 foot square with so much drool it had gone right through my duvet and through to my mattress. Unbelievable!

Your poor dog ladyearl, mine is nowhere near that bad but how awful. I will keep it wrapped until I can find some type of spray plaster but I'm really hoping it doesn't take a week to heal

Oh I hear ya, mine even started to limp on the wrong foot...and then I found application forms for a DLA car....OK, I made the second bit up but he was ripping the backside out of it :p

I don't really bandage there kind of wounds only bleeders because they dry out nicely when left that is unless in your case he is constantly licking (this will take a lot longer to heal) in this instance I would put a sock on inbetween bathing it, to stop him licking.
Also if he goes out then even a thick sock rather than a bandage will allow exercise without the irritation debris getting in which in turn will make him lick and chew more when he gets home.

Hers was a bad case and hopefully yours will heal much quicker but it did not do harm to the paw skin to be wrapped for that long so if you need to resort to that I wouldn't worry. I do get the fresh air approach though and whenever possible I would leave a wound to heal in the open.

Hi, I'm Blazingsaddles and I wrap.

;)

I have got whippety lurcher creatures and they are the biggest cry babies! I follow the procedure your vet gave, apart from rubbing the cream in bit. If you skin yourself, you know how sore it can be! Let alone on a part of the body that supports your weight. So, I wrap and check/change every day.:)

Thanks everyone but after another point blank refusal to go out again tonight I have decided to wrap during the day so I can try and get him out of the door and then unwrap overnight so some air can get to it.

I know it's sore for him but he is driving me mad - what a harsh mum I am! 52kg of rottie doing his best hangdog impression holding up a paw wrapped in fluorescent vetwrap is only sweet for 5 minutes - after 48 hours it becomes a little tiresome especially when combined with intermittent whining.

Does anyone want him?? ;)

Try having a lab doing that for over 3 weeks!

Dylan cut his middle pad on his front left paw a month ago. It was quite deep, but was a clean slice & we managed to stop the bleeding. I spoke to the vet & he suggested washing it, then applying manuka honey & bandaging with padding, changing the bandage every 2 days for 2 weeks, on box rest keeping movement to a minimum.

Dylan spent the whole time on the sofa looking sorry for himself. Every time I took him out he would wave his poorly foot around in front of him & showed every visitor just how bad it was!

I stopped the bandaging a few days early as he started chewing himself around the vet wrap making his foot very sore. 4 weeks on his cut has healed beautifully, but his sores are still pink. He still has a bit of a limp when he's tired, but we're getting there.

Good luck.
