I have a hi viz exercise sheet like this http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=hi+visibility+exercise+sheet+horse&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&rls=com.microsoft:en-gb:IE-SearchBox&rlz=1I7DKUK_en-GB&biw=1280&bih=600&tbm=isch&tbnid=sAUUNUg4LjvDMM:&imgrefurl=http://www.longmelfordsaddlery.co.uk/shop/Rugs/Fly-Protection-Exercise-Sheets/Horseware/RAMBO/Rambo-Hi-Vis-Competition-and-Exercise-Sheet/prod_1581.html&docid=ILnpK5b4tM7qpM&imgurl=http://www.longmelfordsaddlery.co.uk/shop/images/uploads/RAMBOhiVis.jpg&w=390&h=260&ei=_ZdST_P0HZHC8QPcw53vBQ&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=156&sig=103281832767582519628&page=2&tbnh=136&tbnw=161&start=21&ndsp=25&ved=1t:429,r:6,s:21&tx=59&ty=100

And i'm struggling with it! It keeps slipping back when I'm hacking- I use polypads or similar on my TB, which probably don't help with grippiness as maybe a quilted numnah or something might. I've had to get off during hacks to reposition it again- even putting it as far forward as I possibly can, and making sure the girth is through the girth loops, it all disappears under the saddle as soon as we get faster than a slow trot, and my boy, being very tickly, objects pretty strongly!
Any tips about how to keep it from slipping back?! Is there any way I could customise it? :o Would really like one of the wrap around versions that don't go under the saddle/numnah at all but unfortunately no funds for that currently. :o
Really tempted to just go without it, but other than a fluoro hat band it's the only hi viz I have, and I'm not really willing to take the risk when I'm hacking round built up villages and fast country roads.

Thanks

Instead of using the girth loops fold the corners up under the girth straps so it is between the saddle and the girth, if enough is folded under it should stay put.

I cut all mine down so they sit behind but not under the saddle. Then stitch girth loops like u find on the front of a numnah on. Works a treat.

Thanks for the ideas!
be nice- I tried folding the corners up today (without having seen these replies!) so that they folded up underneath the saddle and pad- is that what you mean? Guessing not and that you have a better way that I'm not quite getting, as this did not work at all! Sorry for being thick.

Spotsrock, that seems like a good idea. So you cut it down into a kind of quarter sheet shape? I was thinking of putting on velcro straps (like you described, similar to numnah straps) on the front of the sheet as it is now, that could attach to my martingale/breastplate and stop it pulling back. Not sure if they would just pull at the martingale though.

blucanoo1990- Sensible idea, not sure if anyone will pay enough for it though as it's a bit tatty :o It's had a very active life :o

If your handy with a sewing machine then why not just cut round the saddle so it is like a wrap around sheet?

You need to do it how they do for racehorses.

An ex race yard lass showed me. :)

First, put the exercise rug on but don't pull it back to far. Have it lined up with the bottom of the neck/start of the withers.

Put the saddle on. The girth is not attached to the saddle at this point.

Lift the top saddle flap and girth straps and fold the corner of the rug over the bottom saddle flap. Place the girth straps over the rug and do up the girth to hold the rug in place.

Go round to the other side of the saddle and repeat the process.

Make sure that it isn't pulling down on the withers.

Tighten the girth.

I use the method Faracat has explained above - I also do it for lunging with the roller. I tend now to use wrap around sheets for schooling.

I've also mainly swapped to wrap around ones, but I still have a ride-on woolen Newmarket one which is the best in very cold weather. :)

Ooh thankyou Faracat for making it clear, think I'm having a blonde day  just couldn't quite understand, but now I see, will definitely try that next time!! If that doesn't work (which it probably will if I manage to de-blonde and do it properly  ) then I will indeed be getting handy with my sewing machine I reckon.

Yep I also have a fleecey Horseware Newmarket striped one, and a Weatherbeeta waterproof one which I use for schooling, competition warm up, hacking round the tracks etc - both wrap around, and so much easier! Neither at all hi viz though so have to keep on with the damn non-wrap around one for hacking.

Thanks everyone
