Hello, my mare has now been retired due to navicular and coffin joint issues.

Yesterday I removed her shoes (or the carrier did) and she is now barefoot. She was extremely sore yesterday and barely walking but now she is less sore in her field but still very hesitant on concrete ground.

I've had some advice to change feed to fast fibre, micro linseed and pro hoof. However, can anyone confirm how important turnout is and grass, apparently too much grass particularly during the day can impede the
time in which she adjusts due to sugars???
She is currently out apart from around 4 hours during the day where she comes in for a snooze. Thanks,

If she is retired her routine is fine, just give her time to adjust and avoid difficult surfaces or put boots on if she must cross them

How old is she? You could be very surprised how sound she may become with no shoes on.

Are you interested in having her back in work, because we can probably help you if you want to try?. If she doesn't have damage to the coffin joint and has no outward bone spurs anywhere, then you'd have a pretty high chance of her returning to work if the feet are her only problem.

She has coffin joint damage too. Had she of just had navicular or coffin it may have been manageable but with the two together I think retirement is the best option for her. She has navicular and coffin joint damage in both fore. Given that, as much as I'd live her to have a long ridden life I think my aim is to now give her a happy, comfortable retirement.... And I'm sure diet is key to this.

I am also very interested in any advice on this thread. My horse has just gone barefoot too fronts only to start. I was feeding fast fibre and prohoof keeping the micronised linseed for when grass is restricted as advised. The trouble is he just isnt eating the fast fibre. Therefore not getting the prohoof either! I have just switched back to hi fi lite which he is eating and therefore getting his prohoof! He is turned out all night in during the day but grass is fairly dry and sparse now at our yard so I am hoping less sugar?? He is footsore on stony going but seems quite comfy on smooth surfaces and in the field. He is 1 week barefoot in front with hinds to follow once he is more comfy in front. He goes for MRI tuesday to try and find out what the probloem is but lameness blocked to the hooves, nothing on x rays.

Hi Jessie, poppy isn't usually fed in summer but she is currently on hi first lite. Instead of changing to fast fibre I'm considering leaving her on that and just adding the linseed and pro hoof.... I guess it's a case of trial and error for all. I've also heard that magnesium oxide is brilliant for hooves alongside the linseed and pro hoof.
