Hi all,

Went to yard sunday morning (morning of our show:() to find my horse hopping lame and in lots of pain :(:( vet was called and it tuned out to be a hoof abscess and gave her antibiotics and painkillers. Farrier came to take off shoe & drain it on Tuesday and since then i have been poulticing it. She doesnt appear lame (is weight bearing) but her hoof is very hot. She has no poultice on at the moment and im not sure whether to put one back on. Can anyone give me some advice/tell me whether i should still have it pouticed? i dont like the idea of dirt getting into the hole but someone told me you should not poultice for too long...

ps. Phoned farrier yesterday as he was to replace the shoe today but i told him the foot was still very hot and i am i dont want to rush her recovery, so he should be coming out start of next week

Just keep a dry poultice on it to keep it clean and keep dirt out of the hole. If you can get some Teramisin from your vets then that will help close over the hole much, much quicker and you'll be back on board bouncing around the place before you know it!

If it's still hot, get some Hydrogen peroxide, 50/50 with water and syringe where the abcess was, if it fizzles there is still muck in there if it runs clear it's clean, do that for a couple of days. Is she stabled or out?

My girls just got over her first one. Iv not dealt with one for years and the yard did the first one for me, but when I took it off I was shocked how hot her foot was. The second day her foot was warm and the third normal and we did 4 days of poulticing before she went out. She had 2 wet ones and 2 dry ones.
