Help with my dogs diet - not quite raw :)

Hi

I currently feed my dogs the prizechoice frozen minces with science plan biscuits.

We used to be on the tinned stuff but my old girl started going off her food just before she was PTS and ended up on the mince to tempt her to eat - my other dog now refuses the tinned stuff :)

this lead me to look at BARF/Raw. We now have a puppy - she's actually my mums and she's not happy to feed chicken bones (shes looked into it but doesn't want to take the risk from whats she read on the net as the loss of the old girl is still quite raw)

i'm planning on ordering some of the minced/chopped meats from landwoods and another place that has ground up bone with the mince.

To the point of the post!
is this going to give them what they need? - i've been looking into the gain/cereal free mixers such as wellbeloved but is this giving them anything more that what they would get from the meat? do i need to be thinking about supplements

help -( and i thought horses were complicated)

Raw to go deliver nationwide with the correct ratio of bone in their minces. Also try Dog Food Company if you're south of Lincolnshire. I've fed my pups raw since they were about 5 months, bones have never caused a problem. Do read the raw sticky above for variety of food you can give.:)
 
Gorgeous girlies!

My four month old GSD puppy is on a mixture of chicken wings/thighs/drumsticks, minced anything (chicken/turkey/lamb/beef whatever I pick up from the bargain bin at Tesco) and the Prize Choice blocks, oily fish, eggs and then the only dry/cooked food he gets is Skinners kibble from my hand (or bacon bits/chicken pieces, again, whatever is in the cheapo section at the supermarket) as 'sweets' or training aids.

It's more than enough for them.

See if you can have a chat with some local butchers or even some greyhound racing people - my friends have sourced a great guy who supplies to greyhound trainers, who makes a mix of minced tripe, bones and fish, which can be easily frozen into blocks, stinks to high heaven but is the best food I have seen/experienced in a long time.

Genuinely, I know tonnes of people who feed their dogs raw chicken with no ill effects at all.

To add, I don't feed the kibble for nutritional value, he gets all he needs from the meat, bones, fish eggs, IMO, it's just handy for hand feeding as it is small and not messy and I replace it if I find more suitable treats in the bargain bin!

I agree with what the others have said - my two have just had their breakfast of chicken wings which as usual caused much hysteria as I didn't give them out fast enough:rolleyes::D

They get Skinners as and when they need a dried food ( when staying at parents) :)
 
Gorgeous sheps.:D I have never fed raw chicken wings to a pup, purely because I am a recent convert to using them and my girl is now nearly 3. However, back in the day all are pups were reared from weaning on a band saw mince which had bone crushed in it and we never had any problems. I think the only reason we changed was because complete feeds became the norm, and most puppies new owners wanted to use them.
I feed a mix of Skinners Duck and Rice and raw (chicken wings,mince etc), on different days and it really suits mine. This post has actually got me thinking about what I would wean any future litter on to, any suggestions from the raw gurus?
 
G has basically been on raw (mince/minced tripe/DUCK to begin with, then chicken wings) since he was weaned.
As a first timer, I have to say, I am impressed. Very few poops and when they arrive they are very small and compact, he has tonnes of energy, bright eyes, good coat.

the company suggestions are great and will have a look - it seems we can come to a compromise with the chicken thing then, off to fill the freezer :)

Thanks, I was actually thinking of pups around 2 weeks of age rather than older dogs which aren't mentioned in the sticky I don't think. I always start on minced beef (best quality no skimping for my pups), then latterly used to go onto a complete. My only concern re the raw was whether supplements would be needed for a large breed (we used to give bonemeal ). From what CC says, and looking at Floofy it seems basic raw is just fine. Just had a look at the Raw to Go site, some good stuff on there, but makes my butchers bone in mince a real bargain at 26p a pound. :D
 
Raw to Go is good for ready made with the correct ratio, great for someone who isnt sure about raw or is experimenting. I think they're expensive compared to the Dog Food Company or my local greyhound trainer supplier at 23p a pound for green tripe. :)

There are some breeders on that other forum who wean onto raw. I think they've mostly used the health section to talk about it.

how many freezer draws do you think 40 packs would take?

It looks ideal (I've always wanted to feed raw, just worried about space) and looks cheaper than his kibble and 50/60p a day

There are pictures on the other forum to show what fits in which freezer. Weird, but helpful. If I buy 30 packs, it fits in 3 freezer drawers of an upright, head height freezer. I can fit packs of offal etc round that (my tripe comes frozen so can't be manipulated). I get about 30 packs of tripe every couple of weeks-pups are fed about 5-600g a day, packs are a kilo but they have the ratio of 10:10:80 one, offal, meat so have raw bones, heart, liver, kidney added in daily, plus raw eggs, tinned or whole fish etc, yogurt.

I have to say that my adult dog was fine on raw for months then decided he wasn't eating it anymore, no matter what I did, so maybe don't get too much at the beginning just in case your dog isn't over keen.

I only have 3 draws in my freezer with no room for another one anywhere. My plan of waiting till we move into a bigger house is going to have to stand.

Just looked at the packs and realised they're actually a kilo each. I've got two trays so 60lbs, 30 packs. I reckon I fit those 30 packs in three drawers, given there's chicken wings, raw bones, offal in there too.

I reckon you could easy fit a month's worth in 3 drawers, therefore. Could you split a delivery? If you phone Scott at the Dog Food Company, you can ask if he has a customer near you to do that.
