hi to everyone, im new to this site so not to sure what im doin!
just thought someone might be able to help. i have a 16.2 dutch warmblood gelding. i need help with a new bit for him but not sure what to use......
he is soft in the mouth but strong in the hand. And he is running away with me. He is in a copper roller and sometimes a snaffle at the moment.also he is tossing his head about when riding and mouthing/ chewing on the bit. i don't want to use any thing too severe but i cant stop him in what he is in. Any suggestions?

no i havent tried either. he doesnt like the flash becuse he hates not being able to open his mouth although he needs it shut. but he chucks his head about with it on.

Has he had his teeth done?

On dear, I know this one only too well!

My advise you to would be to obviously rule out the physical i.e. mouth, teeth, back, muscle, confirmation.

Having done that you are then only left with the emotional, and confidence issues, which to be honest this really sounds as though it is.

I would advise you to consider learning the skills and attaining the knowledge available in the Parelli Natural Horsemanship program - I know there is a lot of salesmanship in that but the knowledge is sound, and it works!

In my opinion it is much better than going down the bigger bit and tie downs route which in my opinion is totally unnecessary.

Good luck, if you want any info, please feel free to pm me.

We use french link snaffles for both ours, they seem to lie more comfortably than a lot and I find they fuss less with them.

Hi, Welcome.

I'm sure you have been down this route but have you tried different mouthpieces out? I had a horse that would take a nathe bit but hated rubber or anything coppery, and he'd refuse to go forward in a straight mouthpiece, fuss with a single joint but was happy with a french link and happiest with no bit at all.

After all the physical things have ruled out it is just a question of finding what he actually will be happy with in his mouth and then take it from there.

Good Luck.

we had the same with one of ours. We changed his bit to a french link snaffle with the side bits (can't remember its name) and changed his noseband to a mexican noseband as he hated the flash with a passion! lol. It also took alot of schooling aswell.

Also my other was strong, yet had a soft mouth. Put him in a nathe straight bar snaffle. had brakes and its very soft in the mouth (literally folds in half)
