Hi...i'm goin to guy buy my guy a new bit today. I need some more brakes while out hacking and riding in open fields. He's currently in a snaffle with full cheeks and has previously only ever been in a eggbutt snaffle. Now i'm the first to admit that i have no idea about bits and how they work. I want one that will give me the extra stopping power that is needed but i aslos don't want one thats gonna be too harsh on the guy. I don't like the idea of a double rein on him either. i've had a look and think maybe some sort of gag would do it? could put it on the milder ring when schooling maybe? he's extremely strong and i have to use my whole body weight to stop him when he goes. Many thanks :)

Hi,
There are shops online that you can "hire" different bits from then purchase if it works out. I found this quite good as it saves having a tack room full of bits that are no good! (Unless your tack shop will exchange them? Mine won't!).

Not sure of your budget, but the Neue Schule Universal is a fab bit: http://www.nsbits.com/index.php/sport-horse-collection/loose-lever/tranz-angled-lozenge-universal.html. You can use it in loads of different ways (like a hanging cheek, like a gag, with a curb strap or without, or with roundings) it is really adaptable to different activities, and makes it good value too. The mouthpiece is gentle with its shaped lozenge, but you can experiment with different types of poll/curb etc pressure to find what works best for your horse.

Good luck! :)
