Hi.
3 months ago I bought what appeared to be a 7 year old gelding, forward going Irish Piebald Cob. I rode him at the dealers as did my nine year old daughter. Since bringing him home I have ridden him once successfully on the second occasion I was thrown onto concrete whilst mounting (bucking bronco), so after an 8 hour hospital visit, was told not to ride for 3 weeks.
I have a very experienced instructor at my yard who has been schooling him for mounting and can get the head stable girl up ther no problem now with a leg up. The mounting block is still an issue.
Anyway I bit the bullet tonight after 5 weeks and went for a leg up in the sand school after watching the stable girl go up and down 5 times no problem, he stood like a lamb. He went nuts when I got on and I am grateful to be alive.
I don't know what the issue is and I really dont care now. What I am asking is if anyone knows of someone who could iron this issue out and sell him on (I know to expect not much money back). I don't want to sell him privately in this state, i couldn't live with myself if someons was really badly hurt.
Thank you for any help.

Sadly I think you should have gone back to the dealer after it happened the first time. It's probably too late now. Have you had a vet check him out?

If your instructor and the stable girl are doing fine with him Id ask them to carry on riding and get some people to view him. Are you particularly nervous when you were getting on originally? Obviously I would have thought that you would of been the second time, which is a given, maybe he is sensing this? Seems unusual that he was fine with the stable girl a few times and then particularly did it with you. Sorry to hear it though, its horrible when things turn out like this.

Assume you have had back checked, vet check, teeth checked, physio out, saddle checked etc? Spoken to the dealer you bought him off?

Is it the same saddle you tried him in? If not, did you have his saddle professionally fitted?

Did you have him vetted? If so, were bloods taken? Have these been checked?

Sounds odd that he was ok when ridden at dealers and now having these bucking fits..sounds pain related.

I wonder if the issue could be with you, and not with the horse. PLEASE don't take this as a criticism - it's not. It happened to me years ago, with one particular horse, and never again. Other people could ride him. I could not. I was mortified, as in those days I was very light, and have always beeen a quiet and confident rider and have ridden all my life. At THAT time I think I had 20+ years on the clock!

Providing they are forewarned, I think you need to see others ride him, particularly people less experienced that your instructress, to work out how he behaves with Jo Public generally. I don't think it's necessarily anything wrong with him physically, or with his saddlery. It's a brain issue.

Have you altered his feeding since you got him - does he look in much better case than when bought. It's amazing what a bit of good living can do to some horses....

By the way, how experienced are you?

I have had his saddle and back checked. He was vetted but nothing found. Chiropractor dentist and vet say all ok. I just need to get someone to help with retraining and selling on. I am now to scared to mount again. I suspect I take too long even with a leg up. Can anyone recommend someone to assist with selling. Thanks.

I should have said. I am now in my forties and have got back into riding after a 15 year break. It probably is me but..... Still don't want to risk anyone being hurt.

Have you contacted the dealer.?

Agree that's the first port of call as everything physical has been checked out.

As you bought him from a dealer, you would have a case for getting your money back.

If he is really that bad, you will struggle to get anyone to take him on and pay you for it :(:(

Oh don't get me wrong the stable girl has jumped him etc beautifully. I think it is me. He is great on the ground and around my kids etc just when I mount. The one timely rode him at home he was great lovely to ride.

OK..what was he advertised/sold to you as? Ok for a novice? Needs an experienced rider? Were any potential issue's such as bucking told to you by the dealer?

By law, if he was incorrectly/falsely advertised, you would have a case for returning him to dealer and getting your money back, which would be ALOT better for you obviously.

But first step would be to ring him/email and discuss.

Which dealer was it? If you want to PM me, that's fine. Depending on whereabouts you are, I may be able to tell you if he's a known good dealer or not!!

You just want him gone and I for one don't blame you. There are selling agents out there, I know a girl who used one. The agent took the horse straight away and the girl paid the livery fee until the horse was sold a few weeks later. The relief the girl felt as the trailer pulled out of the yard with her horse on board was obvious and she only lost a couple of hundred pounds on what could of been a very big and expensive mistake.

Hi, I had a very similar experience with a piebald horse I bought from a dealer. The first time I tried to mount he bolted off when I was half on and I ended up being airlifted to hospital and having 12 stitches in my head. We went back to basics, legging up etc, but every time it got to the stage the rider put their leg over his back he panicked and took off.
I had been in touch with the dealer since my accident, she said that he was not a machine and would settle. He was sold as 'quiet and easy in all ways' and obviously this was not the case. After he did it to my instructor and almost jumped the manage fence in his desperation the dealer refunded my money and took him back (I also mentioned getting his vetting bloods tested).
I hope you get it sorted and your nerve doesn't suffer as a result. There is the perfect horse out there for you x

I have a horse that is perfect for anyone else riding yet hates it whenever I go near to get on! It's obviously something in their brain telling them something is wrong
