Help with scab that won’t heal

Hi just wondering if anyone has any wonder creams for wound healing?

My mare cut her pastern about 4 or so weeks ago, not deep and it didn’t really bleed at all either, but it won’t blooming heal! It scabs up, then the scab starts to fall off then it oozes again. Then scabs again…on repeat! I’ve so far used sudocreme, silver spray, verterinus wound gel and lately biteback silver cream which seems to help the most…but once the scab is off it just oozes and rescabs.

It’s not hot or infected and she’s never been lame etc, it’s not sore to the touch. It doesn’t get muddy…it’s really weird!

She does have a touch of mallenders on her front legs but that’s totally gone with m&s cream and I even used the farriers M&S cream on it in case it’s that…but that didn’t do anything either.

Any suggestions welcome! Thanks

Had a similar wound with one of mine. Vet came and cleaned and cut back the dead skin, it was awful for weeks. Flamazine was given by vet to start with after it was cleaned with plain water each day . This was mid winter when it was hard to keep dry . I found the silver cream not spray healed it best I just kept slapping it on

Thanks I have the vet out on Friday for a jab so I’ll ask her to have a look, I did wonder about flamazine. We’ve got the spray and cream and silver cream seems the best so far!

Thanks I have the vet out on Friday for a jab so I’ll ask her to have a look, I did wonder about flamazine. We’ve got the spray and cream and silver cream seems the best so far!

I would say it took about 8 weeks to completely heal. I had to keep sending photos to the vets for updates.

Yes I had another nasty cut on another pony of ours that took months but it was more extensive, this seems so trivial! I guess they are all different!

I had this exact issue and a local nurse gave me better advice than vets!! turns out it needed to be kept clean, dry but slightly moist and get air to heal properly. any other cream, spray etc was giving the wrong balance for healing.

Make sure wound is clean and get Inadine dressings.. stick the inadine dressing on with medifixx tape... and cover with tubigrip if needed to give more protection

but you need to have something that acts as a mesh, lets air in, but keeps area sterilised but moist. I went through a month of scab, scab fall off, slight blobs of pus and then another scab, and repeat! drove me mad.. inadine and tubigrip healed it in 2 days!

creams don't let air in, and keep it too moist, so cutting cream mightnt work

Does she have CPL? You've mentioned mallanders so it's a possibility.

CPL horses can heal very poorly on their legs. Plenty of advice on CPL website and Facebook page.

In general products to apply as above here but management and a CPL appropriate diet would make a difference.

Do put battles summer fly cream on to prevent fly strike too.

No I don’t think so, I did wonder the same but can’t see any signs of CPL…she’s already on a fairly CPL type diet anyway as I am on that facebook page, so I know what to avoid, but it’s one thing I did wonder about with the Mallenders. Her legs have been really good bar this annoying cut! Will definitely mention to the vet in case x

Have you tried Vetericyn spray? It forms a skin over the wound, that allows it to moist heal.

I had a similar issue years ago. Turned out he was lying touching a patch of swallow poop (hidden in the straw) and he was reacting to it.

Maybe just leave it alone and put nothing on it and let it heal naturally? I realise that may be an issue if there are lots of flies around though.

It could even be flies are opening it up. I had problems with a very minor graze on one of the donkeys, I only found out that was the issue when I happened to see a cluster of them covering the graze when he was in the field. It looked like a blackberry stuck on the wound.

As suggested above we used inadine but you have to be able to wrap it on very carefully so that the dressing is still open to the air, small hole in the tubigrip worked for him.

Argh!!! So I had left said cut/scab as it seemed to be happier being left alone. Has had a scab on it for weeks. Got to the yard yesterday and she'd knocked it and it was open again....I give up! Vet coming monday...it seems such a trivial little thing but the fact it is not healing is driving me bonkers!

Good luck! Just thought, we had a mare that had a wound above her eye that did the same thing. Turned out there was a piece of a tree branch stuck in her head that was trying to work its way out. Took a lip chain and some careful work by the vet with a scalpel and a set of pliers to get it out. Healed up in a couple of weeks after.

I've been using propolis gel on Arabi's rubbed raw tail and it seems to be working so far although I think it is pinworm so I've ordered panacur guard now as well.

If you know anyone who keeps bees, can you ask them for the dregs from when they collect the honey? This is great stuff for wounds.

Manuka honey is great too, but the former is often free. Oh, and honey will help to push out anything that might be in there, if there is something. Maybe the wound is deeper though than you think. Use honey, preferably the untreated kind from a bee-keeper.
