Hi, need some input. I have been teaching a girl for over 6 months & she has just said she would like to sell her horse. He's 10yo TB around 16.1hh. He hacks out alone or in company, but she has had problems with him at funrides. Basically from what she has described he has been a typical hot headed TB when he went on the funride. She really wants to do funrides but has lost confidence in him in this area.

I have been teaching her on the flat, he & she are coming a long but its still very basic, with the right rider he could go further. He has shown no problamatic behavyer at all during my time of teaching her. She used to travel to me so i know he loads & travels well & is ok in other new places. I have also ridden said horse a few times to get the feel of what was going on with him when i was teaching.

Im thinking of buying him to bring on & sell on in 16 months time after i have intensively schooled him & got a comp record on him hopefully he would of gained some points by then. Im also used to TB's as i own one atm.

Do you think im being stupid?? How much would you pay for a horse like this?? What would you expect to get for him with Novice dressage points??
Or what price for just a general all rounder RC horse??

The only thing that has put a downer on him for me is he may of broken down as a 3yo. She said he does get puffy around his tendon area sometimes, but that may be due to other things as she really doesnt know if he did break down. I would of course have to have a 5 stage vetting done. Especially if im buying him to sell on.

Im sorry it probably doesnt help you, but i bought our ex 5 year old tb for £500, he needed some schooling hence the price. He was an ex racehorse and was so accident prone.

if he gets puffy round the tendon area and you want him to sell on...i wouldnt risk it as he may not pass a five stage vetting and if you want to make money on him this may hinder it...but if he is dirt cheap then go for it and buy him.

At 10 years old, I think he is too old to take the gamble, unless you can pick him up for less than £1000. Have you seen any flashes of brilliance from him that make you think he's worth taking a risk for?

Yep i agree with all your comments!! Just needed some sense knocking in knew i could count on you guys. TBH i wasnt out for making money as every time i set out to sell on i end up keeping the horse lol.

Obviously i wouldnt want to lose money though & by the time he would be ready for sale he would be 12yo which to me is still young. But of course there's a lot of what if's that goes a long with this horse, & to be fair even though she is willing to sell him to me for a lot less than she wants for him, it's still to much & i wouldnt want to offend her so i will bow out gracefully i think!!
Thanks everyone
