Advice please. I’m looking at buying a Kia Sorento 2011 2.2 automatic which has a braked towing capacity of 2000kg. I need a vehicle for a family car a 7 seater and to pull my 1000 kg ifor 510 and a 640kg horse occasionally. This seems to fit the Bill and has decent mpg and I’m fine to be limited to one horse only. This puts me a tad over 80% capacity which the folks at Kia say is fine... anyone else pull with the newer models (lower tax and better mpg)? I’m trying to get everything in one car and it might not be possible... any thoughts? Is this car powerful enough?

I assume that you have a B+E licence. Yes, on paper it should be powerful enough, more bhp than a Shogun and slightly lighter. The manual has a higher towing capacity of 2500 kg but the automatic will be easier to tow with. Keep all the weight of tack, water etc in the car and you will almost certainly be around 80% capacity.

Thanks... I was sent a useful link and comment that I’ve found clarified things
“Just to add, it’s NOT the MAM you need to be able to tow when you have your B+E license. The only time you need to consider the MAM of a trailer is if you don’t have your B+E, in that case you can only tow a combined MAM of 3.5T.

It’s an absolute minefield on the internet as everyone has a different answer and I don’t think the law would take that as a valid excuse if you took someone’s incorrect advise?

The towing guide from H&C is quite helpful - https://horseandcountry.tv/towing-horse-safely-legally/

In an ideal world it would be good to be able to tow the MAM of a trailer but it’s not the law that you need to be able to
