My horse has never been perfect traveling, we knew that when we bought her two years ago, she just used to bang slightly when going around left hand turns, but nothing drastic and would be fine the rest of the way.
However, spring time she began banging awfully, i went in the trailer with her to see what was happening and every time we wobbled she would lean back, and practically sit down. She tries to wedge herself between the wall and the middle partition to stop herself stumbling, but is too small and ends up loosing her back end. Nothing happened for it to turn this bad, it just came on one day while going to train at somewhere up the road.
She has no problem loading into the trailer, it's just once we start moving, and will load again after she has been banging. have you any ideas of how to stop this? I've heard a lot of similar cases but none of them have answered this. Thanks!

Have you tried travelling without the partition? My gelding used to travel perfectly in a trailer and then like yours suddenly started not being able to balance. We had an ifor williams 505 and we moved the back part of the middle partition over so he had the front half to lean on and he could spread his back legs out as far as he needed to balance. We used to arrive at our destination and he would be standing diagonally in the trailer with his back legs spread far apart. After we did this we had no further problems. However, could only then travel one horse in there so in the end changed to a lorry.

I know other people who have removed the middle partition completely and this seems to work as well.

Hope this helps

I had just the same with my mare. Removing the partition solved it completely. She now stands diagonally across and seems to balance much better. It's a bit of hassle, not being able to travel anything else with her but at least we get to go out.

Echo removing the partion. My cob is THE worse traveller (scrables all over the place, tried to climb the wall etc etc) with a partition yet doesn't so much as stamp without.

If you have an ifor williams you can buy full length breast and bum bars for £60 for the two. A very worth while investment.

Agree with everyone else - I also had a pony who began to do this (for no reason), removing the partition solved it completely. Also, with our one, he would also travel fine with just the back section of partition pinned over to the other side but some trailers dont do this. But if you do it this way, you then keep the front end in the usual position which means you keep the usual breastbar because if you take the partition out completely you'll need a full length breast bar!

After ordering breast/breech bars last week had the same brainwave this morning about pinning the back half of the partition to one side

M_M, Have you tried it with the back half of the partition removed completely - would this work as well?
