I have a lovely sect c gelding.....one of his downsides happens to be his amazingly, thick, unruly bog brush of a mane!!!

He has a whorl 1/2 way up......the lower half is very thin, very well mannered and dutifully sticks to it's own side The top half is incredibly thick, extremely rude and refuses implicitly to stick to one side!!

Now I consider myself a reasonably able equine hairdresser/beauty therapist

....never had a problem with pulling manes or tails in the past, but this little chap is causing me some concern. I guess some would say he is a native let him remain natural, but unfortunately I prefer a pulled look.

Anyway, as underneath pulled bits are growing they then push the top longer hair over to the left.....I have tried plaiting.....but doesn't seem to work. Any other ideas???

Try pulling from the opposite side, hence the new growth will help push the mane back over to the other side. Might not look very nice when growing back though but might do the trick.

AAAAaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrggggghhhhh
I have the same problem with my daughters pony.
I pulled and it just seemed to stick up. So this yeay I parted it and took an oster rake thru the middle to thin it but leave the longer hair to either side so I can plait it and the outer hairs will hold the shorter hairs inthe middle of the mane in - if you now what I mean?? I also seems to lie better(with the aid of a lycra hood). Trial and ERROR. Good luck!

!!

Not quite sure what you mean.....if you use the oyster rake through the middle section does your pony not end up with a spikey section bit as this grows out?

With regard to Tia's comment, I did consider this but thought I'd end up with spikey bits when/if the mane did lay properly.....bloomin' mane!!

Mine live in plaits - once I have pulled it, I plait the mane and leave it. Needs redoing every few days but you get darn quick at it!

In the 'olden days' they used to sew lead fishing weights to the end to pull them down. They looked like small ball bearings but with a split in and they added weight to the mane. Can imagine how spooked the horse would have been if it shook it's mane though!

I have a problem that half way up H's neck he has a middle parting. I have just done several large thick short plaits. will keep them in all day and night (he lives out) and keep redoing for a while

Oliver, my daughter's pony, has a wild unruly mane. Plaits down to a certain degree but I think it will always look like an over grown mohican.

Just like Josh's!!!

It seems like the general consensus is keep on plaiting....I might also look into purchasing a lycra hood as well.

Many thanks

I'm afraid it's just trial and error. I got so fed up with a sticky up mane i just thinned the lot and plaited it every few days. he looked a right fairy, but it meant i didnt have to brush it which seemed to help matters. He's now got a nice silky mane which lies flat (ish). Lots of conditioner before plaiting helps, he'll look like a greaseball but it seems to soften the mane and help it stay over.
