How do I work out the worming dose for a 6 week old foal?

Want to give him Panacur.

He is a little bruiser out of a 16.2hh Irish mare. Absolutely no idea how to find out what he weighs!

You could use a weigh tape. It apparently works the same for foals as for fully grown horses

ETS - I tried it out on my friends boy's waist and it worked out about right for him too

when my foal was 6 weeks old the vet recommended just worming the mare as foalie gets the wormer through the milk. i did this and had no problems. mare was given her usual amount and she was fine also.............

Brackenhappy I am surprised at your vet's advice. Yes the foal can get worms through the mother's milk but they also nibble grass at a very early age........I would worm the foal as well - maybe get advice from the vet or the wormer manufacturer

I trust my vet with everything, to the point that unless its life and death situation, he only every deals with my horses and has done for years. i do understand what your sayin about eatin grass may then get worms however i had worm count done for mare and foal and everything was fine which is why i continued worming through the mare until the foal was 6 months old. you have to be very careful dosing foals with anything as they have sesitive tums. my foal was on antibiotics at 3 months and had to be given a dose of probiotic suppliment to help her tum deal with it. poo picking twice a day also helps with any poss worm burdens and keeping mares and foals seperate from other horses.
