The worm count will not show up worms which have been overwintering in the gut wall....it only shows worms which actually come out in the poo. Its quite normal to have to clear out a youngster a few times especially if they havent had the best start in life.

Give your vet a call and ask for details of which wormer you should use now and what doseage to administer.

well, panacur 5day doesn't last 12 weeks - you need to worm her more often than that so that's why she'll have a burden again. you need a proper regime and also panacur is kinda rubbish - there's heaps of resistance to it. i recommend equest and equest pramox alternately every 3mths.

i know you poo pick put is the pasture clean you may of had wormy horses on there before the larave would of buried into the ground for winter and know with it getting warmer they are coming to the top and the horse is eating it panacur is good if you have a horse with no back ground worming history coz it is quite sensative on the gut but it only lasts 6 weeks and that would not of done for tape worms either so worm her with an pramox leave that to run its course witch is 13 weeks then get her counted again!

what do you class her meduim count to be? who was she poo counted with? what wormers is the other horse on she is in with?

Give her Pramox now as it will clear out everything including the worms you won't pick up from a fecal egg count. You can then either worm with Equest summer and winter and Pramox autumn and spring, or just Pramox autumn and spring with worm counts in between.

It's good that you're keeping an eye on her worm count. Vets often recommend Panacur Guard (5-day) for a new horse with an unknown worm burden as it will kill some of the worms off gradually to avoid an impaction, but it's usual to follow it up 4 weeks later with Equest or Pramox, depending on the season.

just to point out 5 day panacur is different to normal panacur and I don't think has a resistance problem like normal panacur which is why vet would still recommend for a newbie though prefer equest myself much easier!

er, no! panacur is panacur. 5day panacur is just 5 days of it! there is still resistance to it, but in a horse with an unknown worming history it's not a bad idea to break them in gently and then follow it up with a decent wormer like equest to finish the job.
