Hi guys having a crap day.

Daphi has been out all day in the lovely sunshine. I decided to bring her in to wash down the mud on her legs and hooves and apply some of that udder cream.

anyway on walking her down the drive way i noticed she is limping quite bad on her front leg(left)
i havent ridden or worked her the past day or two and shes just been out in the field.

does this mea she is lame now? or is that different? Im not sure what im supposed to do now? she doesnt seem to be in pain she just seems to limp when walking. poor daphi

yes sorry forgot to mention that. Ive picked her feet out properly to check for stones glass etc... and nothing there they dont look sore or any different
 
Well she's lame if she's limping, but it might not be serious so don't panic yet. Have you checked her foot to see if she has picked up a stone or lost her shoe? Have a look and see if the leg looks different from the other one (swollen anywhere). Have a feel and see if you can feel any swelling or heat anywhere down the leg. She may have just had a hooley out in the field and tweaked something. I expect someone on here will give you better advice but see if you can identify anything obvious first.
 
can you feel any heat on the hooves or just above the hoof on the coronet band?

If you put your 2nd and 3rd fingers together at the back of the coronet band can you feel a pulse?

Id maybe leave her in tonight hose her leg off, and call vet out tomorrow......
 
Ok, now breathe!!!

First of all, she's lame. Now you have to determine why, so, the obvious first...

Has she got a stone in her foot, check around and see.

If not, does her foot feel very warm in comparison to the other. Use the same hand to check. Is she hopping lame or just limping? Has she got an abscess.

Has she been running round the field?

If all these answers are no, or you are not sure, call the vet. Any lameness is something you should ask the vet about.

Sorry, if this doesn't help, but don't panic.

thanks chico ill go to check now. i did check for stones etc in the feet. i havent checked for swelling but i will go right out now and check.

is it serious? do i need to call the vet?
 
Jordan, lameness can be for all sorts of reasons. Once you're more experienced and you know you horse well, you'll have a better idea of what the problem is and what you need to do. I think, while you're learning this stuff, the best thing to do is just call the vet out. They'll give you some advice on how to treat the lameness and give some suggestions how to manage the horse (shoeing, bandaging, etc) to help her in the long run.
 
Hi guys well ive only just got back in i know some of you were waiting for news so sorry for the wait.


I have checked her feet several times there is no cuts or brusing.

I felt up and down her legs too and nothing seems any different to me. also no cuts or anything like that on her legs.

I took her out to watch her walking again, this time i took her on the flat road and it is on a bit of a hill, it seemed to work its self free again. so i wasnt sure what to think. on the way back home (going down the hill) it seemed to re appear. which was strange. but ive been thinking about it and i guess cos when she goes down a hill ( same with when i noticed it going down our drive from the field) the weight shifts more to the front. therefore its putting more pressure on her sore leg! so it obviously is the front leg thats lame.


question is what do i do now? should i leave it a few days to see how it works out or what?

should i keep her stabled or should i still allow her in the feild?

Really stuck here guys. do i need to apply bandaids or anything?
 
Phone your vet for an appointment tomorrow.

She needs to be examined by a professional - not us on the forum.......
 
Ok for now I would keep her stabled and check again in the morning. When did she last see the farrier? It maybe worth calling your farrier before the vet as it maybe an abcess in which case your farrier can deal with it. If your farrier can't find anything but agrees she is definately lame then its time to call the vet.

At least that is the order I would do things in anyway.

Hope it helps - and try not to worry to much!! (easier said than done I realise!)

amymay im not gonna ring the vet out at this time of night. thats just silly. she isnt in any pain! shes lay down anyway in her stable ive just checked. and she is fine. I,ll see how she is tomrrow and try walking her out.


god i can feel a sleepless night coming on already
 
No, of course you're not going to ring the vet at this time of night. In my post I said ring them tomorrow for an appointment.

But please do ring them.
 
I have read your previous threads and then the subsequent ones that deem you to be 100% above board...but *bandaids* on a horse without a cut? You wouldn't just stick a band aid on a kid if they had a limp would you?!

Give it a couple of days monitoring and if it does not improve then call the vet. If it gets worse, call the vet.
 
By band aid i meant a bandage or something for support!

Look im not being funny ok but im worried sick so why dont ya get off my back yeah. why do people on here have to come across so hostile and down right bitchy sometimes?

anyway lets not go there. this isnt about YOU being right and me being wrong. its about my horse not being right ok
 
i'd second the suggestion to ring the vet. i hate to sound like a broken record but this is why i've been advocating a livery yard all along. a forum can't diagnose whats wrong with daffi....you need experienced help on hand i'm afraid. a horse on my yard broke its leg in the field today. fortunately someone realise and she was pts very quickly. i hate to sound dramatic but its because there were experienced people around.... i know i sound mean but it just seems that you take the advice of the people who are saying what you WANT to hear and ignore the rest....

i hope D is feeling better tomorro. i have a TB and he often has strange lameness for no apparant reason so hopefully its just a tweak. but do get the vet...
 
No one on here can tell you what is wrong with your horse. Even the vets! They would not diagnose without seeing her.

If she is really lame and you really want to know why, then call the vet.
 
Ive rang an emmergancy vets called gillmore in lancs. Ive asked if he can come right out beause i obviously DONT have a clue what im doing!


So ill keep you all posted. In case her legs fall off ! best to be safe eh

Now you're just being silly, and throwing your toys out of your pram.

This is clearly not an emergency. But she should be seen by a vet tomorrow.

If it makes you feel any better - my horse also has the vet tomorrow, becuase he is lame and I don't know why. He went lame on Monday night, had the vet Tuesday morning and will have a scan tomorrow evening.......
 
No im not. Im just making sure she is ok. calling the vet is the right thing to do NOW.

im not meaning to be sarcastic here when i say this but some of you seem to enjoy rubbing my face in it that im such a novice. so im doing what a novice should do. ringing the vet. Ive no idea why shes lame. and like you say amymay you dont know why your horse is lame. which proves to me... I do need to ring the vet. and sooner rather than later. I wont be able to sleep tonight.... I hope it isnt anything ive done. i dont think it is. i havent ridden her today or done anything different. she was playing in the field before though. cantering around when she saw me outside. so maybe its just a strain. it gets pretty muddy up by the fence were she can see me. and even though im not a vet i HOPE and think thats what shes done. slipped and strained her leg.


diggerbez i understand what your trying to say about the livery yard. But that isnt an option for me. i dont feel its right for me or daphi. i have personal problems which mean i CANT move her to a livery yard even if i wanted to! its complicated and i dont wanna get into that. I do appreciate what your saying though. i.e experiance on hand etc... but that isnt an option so i,ll just have to make go it alone im affraid
