If a horse has an abcess or a bruised sole will it be none weight bearing i mean stands on three legs and can not bear any weight at all even after danilion double amount of finadyne and acp and anti flamm treatment or would you think some thing a lt more serious? No heat in hoof or leg but goes up the wall with hoof testers!x

Abscesses can be tremendously painful as the swelling has nowhere to go within the hoof so pressure builds up - like if you get an abscess in a tooth. Some horses are very stoic about pain but others are nellies. Our yard cat had an abscess on his front leg and was totally non-weight bearing. We suspected a shoulder fracture from a kick but after £148 spent on x-rays, nothing showed up and he was fine after antibx. Your horse COULD be in such pain that he's non weight bearing and certainly hoof testers applied with gusto to a foot harbouring a humungus abscess will send a horse into orbit but I'd want to know it wasn't anything more serious eg fracture before I went down the abscess route. What does your vet say?

Call the farrier, they are the feet experts! I think it would depend of the size of absess... some horses will react differently to the same treatment too and they all have different pain thresholds. The farrier will advise you the best and then maybe call a vet on his advice. Good luck

i had a horse with an abcess back in august and he held his leg out infont of him and wouldnt weight bear on it, he had a very deep one so had to have a big whole in his foot, but yes it can make them incredibly lame like someone else said. the pressure will build in the foot and the abcess will burst itself if you dont get it dug out.

Yes, they can be that bad with an abscess and medication. As said, get your farrier out. In the meantime, hot-tub twice daily.
