i would like some advise/help i have a 14.2 welsh mountain pony on loan she is very sweet and lovley natured. but i have one problem! when i ride her in the school she can be ethier really lazy or forward going yet refuses to canter! she will go fast trot but not canter! then half way through trotting she will just stop trotting and then start walking sometimes she is a problem to halt to she just wont stop! or sometimes she wont go! if she dosent like the change of rein general when going on left rein she will doa sharp turn in which i roll over her neck! she trots into the arena gate as ifto say let me out! in which it is littelrly impossible to control her as shes very stong and i generally just get draggd along! the whole cantering thing is really bothering me cause i canter on other horses but not her! she will canter fine in woods but just not in school! the owner of the stbles supplies tack im just wondering what peoples opinons are and does she need a stronger bit or something!? as i only go hacking when my friends down the yard cause of not bein allowed to go on my own i spend alot of time in the arena! but 45mins of walk trot transition halts and changing rein is not only boring for me but for foxy to!
 
A little confused that you have a 14.2hh Welsh Mountain Pony - given that they don't tend to get over 12hh... so presumably a Welsh Sec D? How old is she? It sounds like she's not been particularly well schooled and probably isn't balanced enough to canter in the school (imagine trying to run in a very small space, it's not that easy!) You might find the basics boring, but you will both benefit and as long as you keep things varied, your mare is unlikely to get bored (especially if you do hack also - say do 2 days hacking, 2 days schooling and lunge her once a week? giving her two days to chill). Lots of transitions and bending/changes of rein. Even just in walk! You can just do 15 mins even and end on a good note when she is being polite and listening to you.
Definitely worth getting an instructor to help. If she's pulling you to the gate and doing what she likes in walk & trot, then going faster certainly isn't a good idea!! :)
 
Hiya, I think she is running "on the forehand" and maybe you need to sit deeper into the saddle and collect her up more, think of squeezing with your legs to channel the power forwards into your hands. Would be helpful if you can get an instructor to come down and firstly watch them riding the horse and then you hop on.
Definitely dont mess around changing bits etc. it is nothing to do with that!
