Hi everyone!

I've never used the forums before but I was just wondering if anyone can help me out. I have a beautiful 12 year old arab gelding for sale (free to a good home) however I don't seem to have any look finding him a suitable home.

I thought I'd found him the perfect home however they let us down repeatedly and after just over 5 months of messing us around they finally said they couldn't afford him. I'm now unsure where's best to advertise him - I'm keen to emphasise that money isn't an issue but I'm worried that as soon as I mention this, people will think he's got issues!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Danni

Hi Danni, I think stating that he is free to a good home on the advert will lead potential buyers to suspect he has some issues and may nresult in people who can afford to keep the horse

Try putting him on Horsemart or advertise him through H&H (you can't do it through the forum) and put £1000 for example and state that home is more important than price and that prospective homes will be vetted.

I agree I read your post expecting to see he was a light hack only or something! Also it may attract people who think that if they can get a cheap horse they're sorted, without knowing the ongoing cost is the biggie!

I think you could put a price of £500 maybe more, just to deter those sorts of people, and yes say home more important than cost and open to offers :-)

Good luck I hope you find him a nice home :-)

Thank you all for your help.
He's definitely rideable! He's done dressage showing and pleasure rides but he's very low mileage!
I put videos of him on YouTube, 'edwin Arab gelding' but everyone who contacts me says we're too far north (we're near Liverpool).
Does anyone know of any advertisers specific to the northwest?
Thanks

Oh he's pretty :-) How tall is he?

Don't worry you will find someone, if you really don't want money you could give it to charity or something! But I think he is worth money for sure!

I'd be very reluctant to put him on a sales livery - I've heard some stories about a few local dealers and it's certainly not something I'd want to put Ed through:(
He's 14.2/3hh so I'll just have to keep looking for a confident youngster/lightweight adult to come along and spoil him!

I have to confess I am slightly confused here as to why you are giving him away. From your description of him and the videos on YT I would have thought he was very saleable.

Please dont give him away, he will end up in the hands of people who either cant afford to keep a horse or some chancer who will just sell him on the moment they get their hands on him.:(

I have to ask, and I hope you wont be offended by this, but one of the videos in particular looks very much like a sales video and is dated last September. Have you been trying to sell him and has he failed a vetting or something?

Just seems rather odd - he is a lovely pony and seems very steady, I can think of at least a half dozen people who might be interested in buying something like him, so I am a little suspect TBH.

We had a few people showing interest in him.
He came back from a 1yr loan with a 15yr old girl and he'd developed a few annoying habits (always wanting titbits, shuffling his feet if he wasn't getting attention, not keen on having his boots on) and when the vet came out he did all of these things and understandable the lady was put off.
I then spent a bit of time settling him back in at home and when he had a 5 stage vetting in November he behaved impeccably (and passed the vetting)! The lady was ready to pay full price for him and then we found out that she had toddlers/young children who would be allowed in the stable with him and this is something I simply don't agree with. As I mentioned before, the home really is more important than the price so we refused to sell him.
My dad's always said he's got a home for life with us but I really don't have time and I can't let him go to waste. He's done dressage, showing and pleasure rides and he's got so much more left in him!!

lol, I know, he looks lovely. Do you by any chance know of a clone of him in North Yorks? ;)

ETS: apologies for any offense caused. I'm looking for a horse to buy at the moment, so am constantly googling the details from the ads to try and find any hidden info ;)

PS: post him to me ;)

Yeah the video on youtube was supposed to be a sales video (awful camera skills by my dad!) for anyone living outside of the area wanting to see him being ridden before making a journey up here.
I can completely understand people being a bit suspicious but I'm being honest! I bought him from Halsdon Stud as a 4 year old - if there was anything wrong with him I wouldn't have waited 8 years to do something about it!

Please don't advertise him free, he looks lovely and someone somewhere would be very lucky to have him. I know it's annoying when they come back from loan and have lost some manners, (been there) but surely better than going somewhere who are going to sell him on for a quick profit, and that is the most likely thing to happen if you sell him cheap or give him away (as well as attracting those without knowledge or finances to keep a horse)

He is beautiful. Try Preloved, know for a fact that things are selling if reasonably priced, and also try this as a local site.

Good luck, whatever you do.

Hello, he is lovely and I'm really tempted and only down the road from you, but I think two are enough for me! Stunning though! Have you tried Merseyhorse?

Thanks 'horsesatemymoney', that looks great. My horses are stabled at the back of my house so I haven't got many horsey people to ask about these sites!

He is rather gorgeous...a large version of my daughter's grey Sec B...:)

I'd bite your hand off except I'm plod happy... Try Preloved as suggested... I bought my daughter's pony via AdTrader online - it can be regional specific when people search...

He's definitely got style and worth far more than a 'free to good home' advert... Unless, of course, you knew someone who you were absolutely sure had the perfect home to offer him and he'd be a happy bunny for the rest of his life... Good luck... :)

Sorry to go off on a tangent, but just because someone can't afford the initial outlay of purchasing a horse, doesn't mean they want a horse free to turn a profit or ride into the ground. 9 years ago I took on FTGH 19yo DWB, (never heard from his prev owners after that) and i had him pts last April aged 27 :-( :-( He cost me a fortune all the years I had him, but he never wanted for nothing, and I'm truely grateful to everything he taught me :-) rip old man

Please don't tar us "want a free horse" all with the same brush.

Good luck finding a forever home for your chap :-)

Ditto donnie darco :)
I took on a free to good home pony, when I urgently needed a companion for my mare.
Mysti is honestly the biggest pain but she will be with me forever!
I could afford to keep another horse, but I would have been saving for months to buy one while Hon would have been on her own ..
