okay so given fox's past history i find it almost impossible not to go into freak out mode when he gets the tiniest cut.

but i find this a bit odd. due to me working full time now my sharer tends to have him more than i do (im lucky if i make it to the yard 2 or 3 times a week these days). Last time i was up, about 5 days ago, i noticed a cut that was maybe a couple of days old. Lindsay (thats my sharer) never said anything to me, which i dont blame her cos its minute, and it looked fine to me.

I cleaned it anyway and applied fucidin H antibiotic cream and that was that. But tonight when i went up the area around the cut was slightly swollen and fox was showing discomfort when i touched it. although theres not much heat in it at all, the swelling and the discomfort are ringing those familiar alarm bells. lindsday was also up today but she never seemed to notice it..

I go on holiday a week on tuesday and dont want to get a phone call AGAIN (last year i got a phone call cos the wonder horse had fractured his leg). So am i worrying over nothing, or do i get the vet out to double check? (They know what hes like and know im a worrier).

well its scabbed over, so it doesnt look infected apart from the swelling really? Its not over a joint no, its on the inside of his right hind, but its just below where the hock joint finishes which worries me.

I would keep an eye on it. Don't put the cream on again in case that aggravated it. If it's not getting better call the Vet out before you go on holiday. Your sharer could give the antibiotics to the horse if they're needed.

Fucidin h contains a steroid and is designed to treat allergic dermititis NOT wounds in which it will increase the risk of infection. I wouldn't put this on it again, ask vet if they will let you have a course of antibiotics and keep it clean with dilute antiseptic like iodine/hibiscrub.

Fucidin was recommended by my vet last time he got an infected cut, it contains antibiotic and is anti-inflammatory. I havent applied it again since anyhow. (Hope this doesnt sound cheeky, its just what my vet told me so im sticking to it, theyve got me by plenty times so far!)

Will be checking it tomorrow, if its not any better i thankfully have a day off on tuesday so can get the vet then.

Of course your welcome to do what you like but you need only spend a couple of minutes reading the data sheet for Fucidin to see for yourself it should never be put on open wounds - in fact your vet should not have prescribed it all, it is not lisenced for use in the horse and more suitable products are. As you have correctly said it is anti-inflammatory but that is because of the steroid. Its prime indication is therefore to supress allergy and antibiotic is only included to reduce the risk of infection which the steroid greatly increases (because steriods are immunosupresive...). PS this is not relevant to treating proud flesh with steroid which is a different matter entirely.

never applied it to an open wound, its always been when the cut has dried out and scabbed. i will question my vet on prescribing it however if what youre telling me is true, the vet that prescribed it is a bit nuts, infact im not even sure if he's at the practice anymore..
