Ok, so just heard back from stud again, and they want to know which stud book i want to register the foal with?

The stallion is in the KWPN stud book, so im thinking thats what i register the foal with?

Also they have said i get 16 straws for my money - thats quite a lot isnt it?

Sorry to sound so dumb, but im not sure about this sort of thing!

Im just off home, so will look at replies when i get into work tomoro morning.

Thanx guys!

I'd go with the stud book the stallion is reg'd to...

And as for straws - my only advice is don't suck any of them!

hmmmmmm see thats what i was thinking......i was under the impression that you only used '1' straw.......but im probably TOTALLY wrong here!

Thats what i thought, just register him/her in the KWPN stud book.

Well, i don't know the first thing about it, BUT, both my two are registered with the KWPN by virtue of their DAM

Their sires are both Selle Francais

I guess you could go with AES as an alternative, but i really don't know the implications...sorry !

You could use your Dams Stud book if you prefer and then get it overstamped with the KWPN.
My mare is reg'd SHB and soon to go for grading and I'm planning to reg foal with them then get it overstamped by British Warmblood.

Though I've just checked and the stallion is graded with SHB as well as BWS so maybe thats why I can get it overstamped.
Sorry, don't think I've been much help

Which stallion are we talking? I was thinking i might put my girl in foal so any spare straws gratefully received!!!

My girl was registered according to her dad's side, trakehner. Just depends what you want i suppose, it doesn't matter too much.

When I looked into AI last year, the average was 3 straws for your money, so sounds like a VERY good deal to me!! You can pay for them to be stored for future use at some AI clinics etc or vets, although watch out as some studs put a disclaimer on their terms such as 'all unused straws remain property of the stud' - I have seen this a lot!

16 straws to use this once on this mare though, sorry to disappoint the others but thats what I was always told, as the stud will only give one "covering certificate" or equivalent and any unused straws either go back or are destroyed.

They won't register any foals if you used it on another mare or a year later etc and wouldn't acknowledge it was from their stallion as the result is only intended to be the one live foal off your mare.

Not sure if it is the same in the UK, but over here it is all based on the dam. It completely depends on which registries she has been Graded through as an acceptable mare. A mare who isn't registered with these societies cannot have their foals registered regardless of the stallion's registry, I believe. Having said that, there a lot of the stallions are also Graded for a handful of breed societies so you just have to find the one which both your mare AND the stallion are registered with.

16 straws is probably about right. We used 3 straws in the mare which was AI'd a week or so ago. Whether she will have taken who knows, but if she hasn't then you could easily be going through a few straws.

TBH im not sure as to if you can reg the foal as KWPN or not

what is Blossy reged as??

All i know is that my 2 NF mares have got to be reged with Wetherbys so that the foals can be reged (stallion is also KWPN but reged with Wetherbys). Otherwise they'd just have New Forest X on their passport. I've got to have both the mares and foals DNA tested.

Also i think you're getting a good deal at getting 16 strwas but you won't be able to use them on another mare now or in the future as the stud will only give one copvering certificate (unless they are a very nice stud, lol). So the foal will have unknown breeding on its passport.

Unless the dam is KWPN reg, I don't think you can register the foal with them. (Might well be wrong, but I seem to remember this is the case, be good to know if it isn't). If so, AES or British Warmblood would be the best bet.
