Also in vet room.

My horse was checked today by my sister who has found a maggot type thing coming out of his belly near his sheath.
it has a hard lump around it.
trying to get hold of the vet for advice by no luck at the mo.
what do you do!? pull it out or leave it in!?

Do you mean a warble fly? That's what your description says to me. I've never had one on a horse, plenty on the cows though and I just worm them with ivermectine, I would imagine you would do the same with a horse, but I don't know, so don't run off to do that without consulting a vet ;)

Hold a warm cloth over it for 2mins then put a blob of vaseline on, the maggot wont be able to breath and will make its way to the surface, good reason to use fly spray because of these horrible things. Good luck

dont pull on it in case you rip the larve as this can infect the area, If it wont come out whole easily leave it be and call the vet for advice

I don't know what it is never seen one before! Just looks like a maggot :( he's working is up to date, but this is coming out of the skin.

could it be a maggot that has come out of his sheath?

they can get infested with maggots up there, it is called fly strike, wait to hear from vet as if it is fly strike you need vet out to assess if any damage has been done and if meds are needed

It's not actually out of his sheath it's on his belly but it's closer to his sheath than his front legs, and further back than the middle of his belly!
He had colic surgery in Feb but it's not near his scar so it couldn't be anything to do with thst could it?

Warble fly larvae look very much like 'maggots crawling out of the skin'.

Actual maggots are unlikely to be found singularly, or on living flesh. It's hugely unlikely to be a maggot, and hugely likely to be a warble fly larvae :)

Do a google image search of the term (it's not pretty, but then I suppose neither is yours..!).

It actually looks more like a tick it's got legs! Seeing it for myself rather than on a photo.
Sprayed it with front line as advised by vet, how long before it drops off??

Am sure my cob has one!! discovered this eve, a hard lump with something sticking out - not sure if its a maggot though?!
Am sure people pull them out with tweezers then it bleeds then you worm?! could be wrong though.....i have left it till tomorrow.
Will be calling the vet for advice before getting the tweezers out.....
