My normally well behaved super to lunge 6 year old Connie cross has suddenly become very naughty. The problem has happened the last 2 times and I managed to sort it but am worried that the next time I lunge him I won't be able to. I got him out on a circle to warm up and the stopped him to put on side reins and he would not go out. Every time I tried he spun a whole 360 turn. It carried on for 20 mins when he was looking at something I managed to quickly get the whip and me behind his shoulder. Any tips appreciated before it becomes a battle. He is very very clever! X

Stop him and put the side reins on when he has just come out of the corner of the school, so his bum is still in the corner (ie so he can't run backwards) and the fence is along his off-side (ie so he can't swing his quarters out and turn to face you). Walk backwards to his shoulder, girth line and beyond driving him forwards in a small circle, repeat making the circle larger each time until you get to your desired diameter.

Use 2 reins then he will not be able to turn round, he is probably getting bored with lunging and using various tactics to avoid the monotony of circles, mix it up by using 2 reins so you can do different movements and make it more interesting

Yes I thought about 2 reins but I can't get behind him he just spins as soon as I am past the girth area! Would be able to do with 2 people but not always possible!

why not just ride and forget the lunging for a while. if he is bright he is probably bored and needs something else to focus on...
.
Yes he dies have plenty of variety. I don't lunge him very often and he went XC in Sunday! But he is a willing horse and always tries his best so may leave lunging fir a while. Thanks x

Could he be in pain? Lunging circles are often quite tight and might show up a low grade niggle that would not otherwise show? Otherwise - get an instructor to help you. Responding to a pony trying to evade lunging is quite an art and you can put yourself at risk.

No defiantly not pain related. Yes he is a big strong horse so I think I will get an instructor down but leave lunging for a while thanks
