Hi All,
I’m wondering if anyone can help me. I’ve recently just got another horse he’s 15yr healthy gelding. He’s not really been worked throughout his life but we’ve just brought him back into work. After a hack out he came back tired and then after some treats and turned out he started coughing. There is no mucus no nothing and the cough if literally once in a blue moon throughout the day. I’ve tried to pin point if it was purely just down to lack of fitness or an underlying respiratory problem… but then I think how can this be respiratory when it’s only just occurred and isn’t consistent. My first worry was the fact the cough started after a harder hack than usual. But now I’m wondering if the apple flavoured treats and apple flavoured lick it treats are causing him to cough… I’m very new to coughs with horses as I’ve never had a horse that’s suffers! But it seems to be after eating anything apple flavoured? Ive never known a horse to do this and I’m wondering if anyone can shed some light!! I’m eliminating apple/apple flavour to see if this makes a different and taking him back to light work to build his fitness levels first, any opinion or advice is welcome!

Stop giving him the apple treats and lick and see if he stops coughing.

Is he fed hay at all? if so it might be worth soaking it and see if that helps.

If his been out of work for a while it could just be that his got a build up of mucus and now his doing something it's shifting.

Ive stopped anything apple wise from today and he’s been on haylage for several weeks now. I did think this too with him being out of work. Thanks for your response!

One of my horses gets a seasonal cough I think he is sensitive to certain pollens and weather changes, I soak his hay and give him a few doses of the Lincoln cough syrup and it definitely helps.

My horse tends to cough a few times when I first trot but not after exercise, the Lincoln stuff is fairly cheap as well.
