What do you guys feed you foals/weanlings in time for the foal shows etc?

She is a welsh section A Filly Foal

thanks x

I have to say that I think this is asking for trouble. The stress from being taken from its mother, plus the stress of travelling, plus the stress of a new place, plus the stress of being alone... you're asking for trouble. Can they not just put the foal in a paddock out of sight?

hmmmm, dont overfeed, but mine used to share a bucket with her mum, mare and foal mix, hey and watch out she may try to suckle from another mare, i bought a foal and caught her milkin from my mare, he he , so cute, my mare would give her milk to anyone, but had to send the foal away 2 a mates to be weaned ,,

i totally agree with andypandy i would make sure it she had got used to not being with her mother first of she may become very distressed

Sorry for conflicting advice and not meaning to tread on toes but I wouldn't feed 'mare and foal' mix - how can a mare have the same nutritional needs as a foal? I would go for a specific foal mix, or consider straights with alfalfa.

Also, I agree the foal will be subjected to a lot of stress this way - if there is anyway they can be separated beforehand this will make it easier for foalie.

Or (this is a crazy idea and probably totally impractical

) could you 'borrow' the mare and then send her back when foalie settled?

Hi Guys,

I agree with the fact i dont want to stress her i didnt like the thought either.

I think i will ring the breeder and talk it over

Thanks everyone xx

i think u will find that in my post i did state that my foal shared a bucket with her mum of mare and foal mix, and thats on advice from the vet , thanku

pink horse, u will find that a foal will become distressed anyway at being separated, regardless of how and wen, speaking from 30 years experience as long as u put foal in with other foals or a good nanny she will settle in time, i think its dam cruel to put her out on her own, sorry but hope this helps, they are like little kids really . best luck .xxxxxxxx

Bessy, didn't mean to cause offence and of course if foalie is sharing mum's food then it makes perfet sense

I just mentioned it as the question was for a foalie on his own and my advice would be to feed specific feed for baby.

Hi Guys

I was worried about her traveling straight from her mum to her new home (8hrs drive) and i dont want to take her stright off her mum in to my trailer as that is so cruel.

I have spoken to the breeder and they are going to wean her first.

She will be coming to a home were the youngest is a yearling and very very playful so hope they make friends

I will post pics when I get her

Thanks for every comment x

Glad to hear that foalie will be weaned before she travels to her new home, we like to wean ours at the same time pending on the youngests age. We stable them in twos, and moms are turned out. Emotionally I find it a very difficult time.
