my friend has a horse that shes had since a foal and is unsuitable to be ridden due to being dangerous,is not suitable as a companion as fights with everything(not a rig), she cant afford to keep him on livery as already has 2 others. cant give away as who wants a 500kg pet? is the only other option PTS? can anyone think of anything else ? please help!!!

hes so petrified and unpredictable- driving would be a no go cos hed freak with something after him. do you have more details on the bloodbank idea?

They live in herds at blood banks so it wouldn't suit if he doesn't mix well. They take field sound youngish horses over 16 hands.

Currently in a very similar situation. No help as it is a decision only your friend can come to depending upon her circumstances, but she has my full sympathies, as it really is an awful situation to be in.

hes 6 and shes tried everything! the only way to manage him is exact routine as any small change freaks him out. hes a bronker and will rear and throw himself over and on top of you,hes different every day .he has no hard feed and has tried all makes of calmers. i think hes had a nervous breakdown personally. thanks charliemouse its an awful situation i just dont know what else i can do to help her

Assuming all the checks for pain have been done & even reputable trainers with a reputation for helping with behavioral problems can't do anything I think there's two options:
- pts or
- sell one of the others so she can afford him.

hes been to 2 professional trainers to be broken and then restarted and they were both experts in difficult horses and very sympathetic. all the checks have been done regularly throughout his -life money has been no object to try to get him right. he had gone to be restarted and sold as hes too unpredictable and green for my friend to ride ,since hes been gone shes bought a schoolmaster and the other pony is a pet who the children cant part with. she cant afford 3 on livery.

Is there a possibility of neurological damage? I would suggest pts as the only option, both for his sake and the owners. He sounds a very unhappy animal and whatever the cause it is time to call it a day. :(

yes PTS is the only option she keeps coming back to for his sake, dont think theres neurological damage he only went like this after he moved yards as a 3 yr old and we just have come to the conclusion that something catastrofic happened to him there-so sad its such a waste he should have been a fantastic horse

Awful situation :(

The owner of the trekking centre where Mr Cob came from used to go to the sales every year and bring back a load (or three) of dirt cheap cobby type horses from the sales, break them in to eventually use in the trekking centre if suitable. She had quite a good success rate, I'd say around 7-8/10 were useful for the work required. The other 2-3/10 were sold to private owners.

However, I always remember this one 5yo 14hh coloured cob, looked like butter wouldn't melt. He would flip for no reason, rear up in the yard, fight with the other ponies, go for people, all teeth bared.... then go back to being completely and utterly calm... so calm it was eerie. He nearly chucked me off the top of a fell next to an edge, chucked the girl who used to break the horses through a fence, then broke the YO arm. He had all the money in the world lavished on him, he was sent away and came back the same... She tried integrating him to keep him as a pet with the retired ponies and he wouldn't have any of it. Vet also couldn't understand his problem, neither could the dentist, the physio or the saddler.

Eventually he was PTS, it was probably for the best, he was a danger to himself, people and the other horses, he can't have been happy for whatever reason.

Know this sounds daft but he had odd looking eyes, can't describe it, but they were odd... So don't know if he was born with a condition or was damaged in some way.

thanks for the feedback all -its very sad but she cant pass him on because shes worried sick about him now,and knew that sending him away for schooling would send him one way or the other, and unfortunatly its proved hes unridable so shes now having to face PTS which was always plan B
