Well, it only took me 4 weeks of being 'back in the saddle' to start helping out at the stables. I spent the morning doing odd chores: sweeping, grooming, saddling, distributing hay... and I had such a great time!

I have been offered free rides once in a while for helping, but honestly, at the rate of half a day every weekend that will be once in a blue moon, so surely that can't be what makes it feel good. My husband (slightly cynical ex pony rider) thinks that I'm getting taken advantage of, and am a fool for doing this for so little 'wage'.

But I loved it! I really enjoy meeting kids, and the kids here were very welcoming and helpful. I got to meet some very nice adults too, maybe start a few friendships (and all brownie points will surely come in useful when I have my own horse.) I got to have some exercise that really didn't FEEL like exercise as it was so fun.

Hubby is happy that I'm happy, but doesn't really understand it. But I'm sure some of you will. Once upon a time I did all these sort of chores, and more, for no free rides, just for the joy of being around the horses. And I still feel like that in a way. At least I got to do the more fun things and not mucking out

I love yard work just for the sake of it, i.e to make the horses happier, healthier, cleaner etc, to make the yard tidier etc. It is always very satisfying to do something well, even when you know you'll get no money or even thanks for it.

I've recently developed an obsession with sweeping and cleaning tack, everyone else thinks I'm mad!
