Does anyone use it?

One of mine (On livery) has gone on to hemcore and I'm not convinced by it. He only has a thin bed and although a base is forming it is mainly wee. Today I could hear it squelching underfoot. I'm not too worried at the moment as he is out over night, but i'm a bit concerned about what will happen when he comes in for winter.

Any thoughts will be appreciated

hmmm, don't like it not very absorbent, I used it for a month and my mare used to dig into it, right down to the concrete base, every flippin' night went back to shavings and no digging.

So no I wouldn't use it again, just personal opinion though!!

I think it is pretty good, but you do need to start with a rather thick base, about 6 inches thick at least, then the bottom of it proveds a cushioned layer, and the top stays dry. I take all wet out once a week and go thru 2 bales as I like it deep and dry. Muck heap is smaller too, which is a bonus for me.

By the sound of it the bed doesnt seem to be thick enough. I used it for quite a while and found it really works for my horse. He has such a huge stable so we put rubber matting at the front and the bed at the back about 8 inches deep. This meant that he mainly pooed on the rubber matting (yes, the stable is that big!) and just wee'd on the bed so very easy mucking out! Only needed to put 1 bale down a week. I have recently changed to Nedz Bedz which is similiar but seems to go further and is cheaper!

It wasn't very good for my boy- he used to kick all the poo into the bed, so it was really hard to remove. I also found the bed got smelly if i left it for a week befor taking out the wet- so i started doing it every day. I ended up taking out a small barrow a day, so it wasn't very economical for me.
I followed the instructions when the bed first went down- and ended up putting in 15 or 16 bales to get the bed deep enough (it is a bigish stable though) so that cost alot!!

I am using it for the first time this year and I am very pleased with it. It is not dusty and it is very absorbant.
I do however have rubber mats so only have about 6 inches deep corner square.
It is very easy to muck out.

Thank you all for your opinions

I have to say I have mixed feelings on the stuff, but I also feel it isn't being managed too well by my yard. My horse is very clean, he doesn't kick his poos about much but he is wet...hence the squelching!!

Today I removed most of the wettest stuff and put a whole bag of fresh in as he will be coming in tomorrow night or friday for the winter. I will see how it goes and discuss with Yard owner, but I feel it is not the bed for him.

On the plus side, its easy to take the poo out and I can see it would make a minimal muckheap, and the new bag I put in had a lovely "fresh" smell

I used Hemcore for a couple of years and like other people found that the bed really needed to be quite deep. My horse was fairly wet in the stable and I used to take the wet out a couple of times a week. I now use Equisorb which I think is even better, and it also comes in recylclable plastic bags. It makes brilliant manure for the garden which rots down very quickly.
