Hi

I've started putting my mare on Hemcore, and I've got to say I love it so far! Her stable smells lovely and it's so quick to muck out.

I was wondering if anyone has any tips for using Hemcore. Like how often do you remove the wet underneath, and what is the easiest way to remove the poo?! At the moment I'm finding it easier to poo pick by hand (with gloves on !) rather than using a shavings fork.

So, any tips?

YUP i love it too.

i deep bed on it. i never take out the wet (prepares to be slapped) and only poo pick (with gloves on also or a poo picker) hemcore will actually set up its own microbial system to 'deal' with the wet. it forms a very solid base which is started by the water you add when you first lay the bed. my base is so solid and well formed i can sweep on it. and i have about 3 bales ontop of my base as the bed if you like

we recently dug up a whole Hemcore bed which had been there for 3 years with no wet having been removed and used as i said above. there were about 8 inches of dry clean surface (excluding the loose bedding on top) before you hit the base. it wasnt overly smelly, no flies or undesireables in the bed. very very impressed

Pixie - i'm thinking of going back to hemcore although I used to take all the wet out every few weeks. Interesting that you don't have to - i used to find that the bed would suddenly get 'squelchy' in parts when i walked across it, and so would have to dig it up so be interesting to hear if that happens to you?

Hello,

Just to let people know that the company who manufacture Hemcore are in adminsitration, so you may want to stock up if you find some bales in your local store. I found this out a month or so ago from the people on the chicken forum I frequent... I'm annoyed 'cos it makes a great base for our chicken run

Apparently the Hemcore is a by product from their main manufacturing process, which is supplied to the building trade... with the lack of money in the construction sector the company have struggled and been put into administration

Hello Hemcore Fans!

My name is Jemma and I work for Hemp Technology Ltd, formally Hemcore Ltd.

Hemcore Ltd unfortunately went into administration on the 8th April 2009 due to a short fall in fibre sales (we sell fibre to Europe for the automotive industry, BMW makes door panels out of our British fibre) when we went into administration we still had a two week waiting list for our bedding.

On the 19th June 2009 Hemcore Ltd - In Administration was successfully bought by one of our customers Lime Technology Ltd... hence the new name! Lime Technology build houses using the 'shiv' which is the same as what your horses are getting a good night's sleep on; but without the citronella!

Today we have restarted production and pallets of Hemcore are being made as I type! The brand name of Hemcore will continue and the packaging remains the same, only the name of the company has changed!

In terms of the best way to use Hemcore, the longer you leave the wet in the more effective the bed becomes, both in time and money. Remove the poo daily (I also do this with gloves on) resettle/tidy the top of the bed and add additional bedding when required. I have five horses on Hemcore and my personal preference is to remove the wet every 5-10 days depending on the horse! I use two bales of Hemcore a week doing it this way. Please do not forget to sprinkle water over a new bed as this activates the bed making it more absorbent, if you are adding Hemcore to an existing bed (i.e shavings) then there is no need to do this.

Full instructions are on our website www.hemptechnology.co.uk

It's great to hear such positive comments about Hemcore bedding, as an end user as well as an employee I can honestly say I 100% agree with you!!!

I used to take the lower wet bed out about every 4/5 weeks & poo pick in gloves daily (or more if horse in) but my mare was VERY wet.

Love it but my mare is VERY tidy - all poo along back wall - she turns round & moves back until her bum is almost touching the wall !! She's not so tidy on straw as it gets dragged about when she moves.

It's great stuff! I've got all of mine on it, some are wetter than others and it works well for all of them! I can get all five stables mucked out (leaving wet in) within the hour Mon-Fri before going to work, and then remove the wet over the course of the weekend! It's saved me tonnes of time and cash!!!
