Well little Henry terrier (1 year only last month) has developed a lump on his lip which i thought I better get checked out. Vet this morning says where is is and its size mean it should be removed sooner rather than later as if it does get any bigger it could be difficult to remove and also they will lab test to ensure its just a benign cyst which is of course more than likely to be. Unusually to have such a growth on pup so young but not likely to be anything sinister. Not worried about that as not an issue at the moment just more worried about the operation itself. Vet said very low risk and should have no problems as he is a fit healthy pup. No food after 7pm Tuesday evening just water and no breakfast etc. Will be in all day and to pick him up after work.

Any advice on what to expect, do they usually come round pretty quickly back to normal after being knocked out. Does he just get his normal tea or would a little bit chicken and rice be better on his stomach? Anything else i need to consider? He usually sleeps downstairs in his crate but should i move this upstairs in case or am I being a muppet!

Used to my horse being the vet case. Pup is going to hate the vet so far been for his vaccs and microchip, the later made him bleed quite alot and now this, he is not one for being fussed (not agressive or anything just looks so unimpressed and resigned to it!) so being prodded about today has put in a right hump and he is currently sulking on the chair in my of my office. Think a nice treat may be requred later on to improve his mood. :D

The vet will be able to advise about food etc - he will probably feel a bit sorry for himself and will want to be left in peace in his bed to sleep it off.:)

Dylan has had a lump on his lip for a month or so now and as soon as it came up it has gone now. Vet said its very common in dogs under 2-1.5yrs old to get them on their face.

Interesting what different vets say. I have lost a lot of faith in vets recently not sure if its because I have new vets from moving or just had a few run ins especially since raw feeding opinions and worming opinions.

Toffee - have to agree its always a concern and difficult to find a vet you can trust, know friends who have had bad experiences with different vets. I do trust my vet, came recomended and has been great with horse etc, not usually one for doing unnecessary things so just got to go with it.

Thanks Spudlet will make sure will ask vet.

One of mine had a general anaesthetic recently and I was very concerned like you but it was explained to me that vets have such a fantastic way of measuring the correct amount of anaesthetic for the weight of the animal these days that this is the reason why our dogs rarely come out to us after these minor ops staggering all over the place as they used to in years past.
He will be fine.......... won't speak to you for a while, but will be fine!!!:)

If it helps I have two going under tomorrow for their boy bits (13month old pup and a recent rehome). Dreading it although Im more worried about Buster than Dylan as hes olders, still underweight.

And worried that they will have Dylan for the whole day at least I get a day off lol.

If it is only a minor op the vet will probably give a light anaesthetic and Henry will possibly just sleep it off tonight and be back to normal tomorrow. However having said that Pickle was castrated just before Christmas, he went into the vets at 9 am and by 1 pm the vets had phoned saying he was fine to be collected. We spent the whole evening trying to stop him doing a wall of death round the furniture, don't know what they gave him but we could have done with some to keep up with him.

Having thought about it have rang vets and also going to get him castrated at the same time. Was going to leave a little longer (no issues other than i will not be breeding from him) to be sure he was fully mature but think as a terrier at just over a year he will be fine so will save him having to be put under twice. So he really will have a complete cob on when i bring him home and for a few days!:D Thanks for putting my mind at rest a bit though.

Sensible thinking. Be prepared for major sulks and hyperactivity whilst he has to be kept to on lead exercise, Pickle drove us mad. He also hasn't forgotten what his bits were for and has been constantly trying to hump Evie who is in season, so much so I am now having to keep them apart. :p

I am not looking forward to the next few weeks...........

Just to put the cherry on the cake, Teal re-opened his tail this afternoon(think massacre type scene in my kitchen as he has a very waggy tail) !!!!!!!! So he is now wearing a E Collar to stop him playing with the dressing and is not best pleased. So tomorrow afternoon I will have three dogs in E collars, I am gonna be mean and get a picture!!!!
