He's gone off for an op at our own vets. They will open the joint, put in a port and administer antibiotics directly into the area, it's a bit of a long shot but they have had horse's it's worked for. Cost will be around £300 to £500 compared to £1500 to £2000 for the arthroscopy. Sadly we aren't able to justify another two thousand pounds on top of the already spent two thousand, as his value is only £1500 anyway.
This is a sort of half way measure, he has to stay there for four days which won't be nice on his own, but they leave the radio playing 24/7 which helps, and our vet is doing us a special favour attempting it. He is one of those exceptional vets you meet now and then, (and no he doesn't read this forum!) who are so dedicated they go that extra mile, call in to see how their cases are doing etc and ring to check you are happy with the progress of horses. I trust his judgement absolutely and if he thinks it may work, it might.
William is fine apart from a hugely swollen leg, he whinnies to you over his door, he is sound at walk which is a big improvement from yesterday when he was very lame, and he is a hell of a fighter like the stallion, who is incredibly tough.
All we do now is hope.
Thanks everyone, I still feel the vibes are helping so keep them coming!
Everything crossed for him - and you all too, Sue. Good luck. Have to admit you've thought along exactly the same lines, there comes a time when you just can't justify massive vet bills, especially if the outcome will be doubtful anyway. Let's hope your brilliant vet snaps his magic fingers for him. Will look out for updates as and when.
Yes, Jon H-T and sister are doing the op. I am more worried how he will cope alone in that stable block, I rang them a while ago but they hadn't finished the op, and asked if they could leave the radio on all night for him so he can hear some normal noise, plus it 's bloody bonfire night and there will no doubt be fireworks going off as it's in a town..
We couldn't leave his dam she is a bargy madam and would have knocked him flying if upset.
All we can do now is cross our fingers, as you know, he couldn't be in better hands with JHT.
Thanks for the offer.
