My elderly shetland was kicked when she was younger and has always had a slightly dodgy hip since - the vet thinks she is now a bit athritic which seems to be more in the hip than anywhere else. She has good days and stiffer days so on her bad days I give her bute which works quite well. I dont like giving bute long term so can anyone recommend a herbal version which is effective?? There's lots around but as usual, which one works!

try flexi joint puts lubricant into joints so need for bute money back guarantee i use it here with remarkable results
gr8 for arthritis

I've tried loads of bute substitutes on my boy (who's retired through injury) I have to say that none of them have done him any good at all.

He is now on long term bute, although he can go for weeks now without needing any, but at one point had it everyday for a year (up to 3g) without any problems.
My vet said that it only causes problems if used at very high doses longterm.

As the recommended dose is up to 4g a day I would think that very few horses would be prescribed more than that and certainly not longterm.

So if your horse needs longterm painkillers/anti imflammatories I'd stick to one that works ;)

I never found Devils Claw any good - tried a few brands. Also you shouldn't use it continually or it can cause stomach ulcers etc. All the Vet's I know reckon that a low dose of bute is fine as long as the horse doesn't have any contra-indications such as gastric issues.

Hairycob - Oh dear :-( did your Vet say what issues would arise if a long term user of Bute (Danilon in my case) has Gastric problems?

My old chap falls into this category and the Vet did say that the long term use of Danilon, 'may' have caused it (or at least could be a contributing factor), however have strongly advised that I continue with its use.

Bute long term is better than constant pain. Herbal products wont work as well as bute.....and I'm a big fan of herbal too.

Things to try (alongside bute) are
Micronised linseed (good for joints and the gut)
Cat's claw (joints and gut)
Devil's claw (anti-inflammatory)
Turmeric (good for joints)
Milk thistle seed, dandelion, nettle (all great to detox while using bute)

Even if your horse does have gastric problems such as ulcers, medication such as Omeprazole will solve that issue.
