My poor horse is still recovering from a virus after taking blood over 2 weeks ago, the white blood count is still not back to normal. He has a blood tonic from the vets and I've also ordered Equistro Haemolytan (another type of blood tonic) for when the Vet's blood tonic is finished. I just wondered if there is anything else I can give him to help recovery, herbal supplements or anything? He has had 2.5 weeks off work (allowed in the field) and is now allowed to start gentle work (walk & trot hacking) but not allowed to get stressed, hot or sweaty. Prior to this virus he was in full competing work and fit & healthy.

Since I have had my horse for over 4 years he has never had a virus before so struggling to know what is best to do. Although I'm sure like humans with virus or flu, it takes time to feel 100% better and I just have to be patient.

Any ideas greatly appreciated

Echinacea is good for the immune system. Dodson & Horrell do a tub of it, may be worth trying. I hope your horse recovers soon. They are such worry aren't they. Let us know how he goes on.

I think Hilton Herbs do a product geared towards this kind of thing. Not sure what its called but would be worth calling them or checking out their website. I have had a lot of success with their other products.

I have had a lot of success with Global Herbs Restore in the recovery period from pretty much any illness. It can usually be fed alongside other supplements so you could probably feed it with the blood tonic.

Feedmark's Clarity is amazing stuff! We have a Andalusian who has a weak immune system, put her on this, and she recovered from her colds within days. We kept her on it for a week or two - she hasn't *touch wood* had a cold since!

Haymolytan is very good stuff, given at the max doseage for a short time then reducing the dose. Worked very well for my mare when she had a virus that caused mild tying up and raised liver enzymes.
Global herbs restore is also very good as a detox/pick me up after a virus.

I used AloeRide this year and that really gave the mare a good pick me up, I will be using it again.

I love Global Herbs "Restore" it had an amazing impact on my poorly horse. He had hugely raised fibrynogen levels - vets thought viral/bacterial infection. The Restore perked him up within a couple of days, I added it to his feed for a month - used a 500ml bottle and ran the course. He is now on the Old Age supplement which combines Restore with help for his stomach/immune system for a couple of months (it can be used on youngsters too) wouldn't hesitate to use it again! At the time it seemed a bit of a lifesaver - it's a blood tonic.

Had a horse that struggled with virus for months. Tried Aloe Vera Juice and hey presto it recovered. Was it Aloe Vera or time - that I cannot tell you!!

Interesting... I was reading about a 4* horse who picked up a virus on February and is just returning to work now. Mine is feeling slightly better but won't know until bloods are back or start more work!
