Given the recent posts on reactions to wormers and my consistent aversion to giving chemicals to horses that don't need them, does anyone know of any herbal wormers that actually work?

that is- have had worm counts/tapeworm bloods and maybe post mortem looks for encysted worms in some kind of controlled trial

or have any good, solid anecdotal evidence (yes, I believe it exists, you only have to listen to any good homoeopath to know that).

thanks, all

I have used Verm-X for the last year. I simply put the herbal powder into his feed twice a day for 5 days every 10 - 12 weeks throughout the year. He absolutely loves the stuff, no more nightmare dosing as I try and get a syringe into his mouth.

Twice a year, say Spring and Autumn, I give a double dose to deal with tapeworm and encysted redworm as recommended by Verm-X. I have had worm counts done, they are always the lowest possible reading and my horse has never looked better, fantastic shiny coat, everyone says how well he looks all year round.

I get a kick out of the fact that I am not stuffing up his system with harsh chemicals and do not appear to have any resistance problems unlike chemical wormers as I believe the herbal wormer creates a healthy environment within the horse that is simply not attractive to worms. I also give a good scoop of quality garlic granules every day in his feed for the same reason.

Friends on my yard have horses that can get colicky after being wormed and some don't ride them for a day or so afterwards as they are a bit "off." I used to do this myself but have none of these issues now. Needless to say, I would not go back to chemical wormers now.
