Firstly a big thankyou for all the support i recieved on thurs eve. It was so nice to read lots of lovely messages when i was feeling so down about my horrid little pony. I took him out on Fri eve and had another epic battle to get him round a hack. I once again ended up leading him almost half way round. But i made him go and after a while i was able to get on and we had a couple of nice trots and even a fun but very fast canter. I sat up as i was worried he was going to buck but he was a good boy and cantered up the track with his ears pricked. :D
He had the weekend off as i go to my OHs and he had his kids this weekend so it wasn't fair to drag them up the yard while i had another battle with Herbie.
So this afternoon i prepared myself to do battle once more. I rode one of the other ponies on the yard this morning and when i went to put her out Herbie came down the field. Oh good i thought he's coming to see yoyo i'll grab him in while he's by the gate. I quickly let yoyo go incase they had an argument. But to my surprise Herbie walked streight passed yoyo and came over to me and put his nose in the headcoller   . I had a few tears in my eye when i brought him in. I think we are starting to bond :D.
I got him ready to ride and took him down to the driveway. I got on and he stood there for a few mins but then he walked on. I gave him loads of praise but after about 50yards he stopped dead again. I got off and led him a short way before getting back on. At the top of the hill all the cows where over by the road so he napped again. But once again i led him a short distance and got back on. After this he tried to nap again but i got him going forwards again without getting off untill we got onto the downs then we saw a walker who rather unhelpfully asked for directions. I gave him them but then Herbie would not walk on. I got off and led him a short way before getting on and riding the rest of the way home with only a few napps but i didn't need to get off i managed to get him going again. :D
I'm so proud of Herbie tonight. I think he is finaly getting the idea. I'm not going to give up on him and it's much nicer if he just behaves. I can't believe i managed to ride about 75% of the hack today. :D:D:D.
Thankyou again for all the support and for reading my updates on Horrid Herbie :p. Have a nice big icecream with lots of 100s and 1000s and a great big flake if you got to the end.

They're clever little devils aren't they:D Just when you think thats it, I've had enough of you, they worm their way back into your heart! Well done, you'll have good rides and some-not-so-successful rides but keep on persevering, the good rides always outweigh the not-so-good:)

I hope he is heading in the right direction!! A friend bought a horse from a trekking centre and she would not move once out the yard gates - much patience and perseverance on his part and she is now a confident forward going hack. It can be done - you have to earn his trust. Dig deep and keep looking forward to the day when you will have conquered this, oh and pack some tissues for the day when you have your dream hack and the tears are happy ones!!

Thanks again everyone.
Wobblywibble. I have found myself wishing i could afford a nice well behaved horse for a change. But i think i will always be on some crusade to help some poor pony on it's last chance even if i won the lottery (i could just afford to have loads of them) LOL. He'll get there in the end and he will be a nice pony weather he likes it or not :p ;) :D :D

Walk, trot and canter! Good little Herbie!!!
Awwh that is so cute about the headcollar, one of them moments when you know why you have him :D
Wow 75% of the hack, remember what it was like at the start :o
Big well done to you for perservering(sp?) and big well done to Herbie for being a (mostly) good boy.
:D :D

*eats ice-cream*

Thankyou aimeejay. I just can't believe how much he is improving. I now have a pony i can groom without being bitten or kicked, Comes over to me in the field, will load in a trailer without anyone getting hurt and will nearly hack out. :D I just hope he keeps improving at this rate and we may get to go to some partys this year. Although i don't know what we're going to do?

Wow ,didnt realise he could be loaded, groomed etc... How far as he come-its incredible! :D Herbie needs a new nickname, you should put up a thread making up a new nick name beginning with 'H' :p ;)
Andd hmm, youll have to get your thinking hat on for that one :D

Maybe i won't re name him just yet. :p Tom it maybe 10 steps back :( Although i hope it's not.:) I will need help though when it is time for a new nickname as i only have horrid Herbie in my head. :( Look out for that thread hopefully it will be coming soon. LOL :p ;) :D:D:D

Well done and hang in there!!! You are making huge progress! He might regress a bit, but overall he is getting loads better so you will get there!

P.S. there is no such thing as a lovely, well-behaved horse!

Woop Woop.....BIG BIG pats for Herbie!
Laura thats amazing to hear! You are so nearly there! If he is now hacking most of the way back without you having to get off, it will be no time at all before he rides out away from home without stopping so much. And good boy for giving you some nice canters too! Im so pleased for you, all of your hard work and dedication is really paying off.
Hmmm ideas for classes for herbie next year.........Thelwell class ;-)

Thanks skychick. I'm about to take him out again in a min so we'll see if he behaves today :p. And in the thelwell books there is often a short fat hairy pony routed to the spot with some girl pulling with all her strength to get it to move. Thats us LOL.
Hope you and Paddy are well and he's still improving to. :D

Good luck Laura, hopefully you will be able to ride 80% of the hack today! all of these extra 5%'s will add up and soon it will be 100%.......well unless the killer pig is about ;-)

We are going to attempt another hack alone tonight so hopefully we will not have too much of paddy doing an impression of a bucking merry go round lol! We actually had a successful ride last week on friday night. No spinning or bucking :-D and he rode out calmly with some friends lastnight......so fingers crossed!.....although i think i am going to superglue the child down the roads feet to her trampoline....every time i ride she is doing somersaults on it right by the road!

I think we need some pics of you and herbie doing your best thelwell impressions ;-D

Hope you have a fab and successfull ride on the little monkey :-D

LOL. There's no one to take any pics but i'll try to get some one day if there's anyone around :p:D:D
Good Luck with Paddy tonight hope he is good. I think the super glue might be a good idea. (I wonder if the killer pig will make good glue then we could solve both problems in one ;):p:D:D)

Good news.
One of mine went through this, so I sat on him for how ever long it took him to carry on, once he knew he wasn't going to get away with him he was ok, never really had that problem since, the longest session it last was just over an hour.
