I love my cortaflex on my older girl, i think herbs can be a bit hit and miss on horses. I think you should have a word with your vet and ask him for some advice as to what would work for your horse, there are some great products out there. : )
Easyjoint from Equiform Nutrition has been great for ours, cheaper than Cortaflex and better IMO, my mare was clicking and stiffer on Cortaflex, not a sound on Easyjoint
Linseed is good for joints, so are rose hips. Devil claw for pain relief.
I am feeding Feedmarks extra flex joint supplement which is not too expensive and on half price at the moment and seems to have all that is needed and our clyde seems to have a more free moment.
I would initially try cider vinegar, then cod liver oil if no good.
You could also try Rhus Tox Homeopathic (Just from Boots)
Those are the cheapest opton, best to try those first lol!
I found Super Solvitax RA extremely effective and then moved on to Cortaflex as time went by.
Also had some success with Blue Chip Dynamic.
Ultimately Synaquin is the best IMO.
Have you thought about getting the Physio out to assess and give you some warm up exercises? Sportabac boots can be helpful and stable chaps. Also 20 mins exercise a day (not lunging or walker) usually helps to get the joint moving.
Linseed is good for joints, it is anti-inflammatory too.
Hawthorn helps bloodflow to the extremities, so good for arthritis.
Celery seed is specific for arthritis.
Meadowseet is anti inflammatory.
Boswellia is a potent herb that has had very good results in humans and can be fedto horses. It is kinder to the stomach than devils claw if used long term.
As for glucosamine being full of fillers and chemicals, that is untrue! Glucosamine is usually derived from pine trees and is actually a constituent of cartilage. Some companies do use fillers with it but if you do your homework properly and read the labels, some are pure glucosamine.

I second this, but ..
Glucosamine is actually from sharks cartilage or bovine tracheas or green lipped muscles.
