They can be endlessly amusing!

My field's water trough is right next to the gate. When I'm bringing Blue in, if there are no horses at the trough, she's happy to come straight in. If there are horses drinking, she has to have a drink first. She doesn't have to do anything to move the others away, not even put her ears back. She just heads to the trough, and everyone scatters.

The only exception is a 2yo filly who Blue has adopted. She's the only one allowed to be at the trough at the same time as Blue, and she likes to flaunt it. She'll come trotting up while Blue is drinking, stick her muzzle in right next to Blue, and then look up to make sure everyone can see that, look, SHE'S allowed and they AREN'T, nyer, nyer!!

(It isn't the case that the 2yo can only get near the trough with Blue's protection, in case anyone is wondering. She's allowed to get away with blue murder in that herd because they all love her.)

That’s very cute! The filly evidently feels very proud of her position with blue ?

I always marvel at my 2 drinking from a small 40ltr trug together - both muzzles in, ears almost touch but theyre very careful not to disturb the other!

Mine have separated into two herds, by colour/size. Larger ponies (bays and browns) in one herd, smaller ponies (greys and coloureds) in the other. Everyone gets on, but they naturally graze in their little groups, of one gelding and two mares each.
