I am currently debating whether to go to uni to do creative writing, as I LOVE writing stories and I love my imagination. I would love to become a well known author too. My other option is an equine deploma.

Now, in the future, I would love to be either an author, and have my own horse/horses (hopefully if this happend I would be able to afford it all myself!) Or, own my own livery yard and obviously, if I can afford that,I would have at least one horse.

Just wondering, obviously both would be very demanding, but does anyone have any experience in starting their own yard or is anyone an author and have horses?

Any feedback would be much appreciated at this exciting but also frightful cross-roads!

An English with Creative Writing degree would give more employment options. An equine diploma would limit you to horsey employment, depends which you prefer.

As for being a well known author, the reality of that happening is incredibly, incredibly slim. I know and have worked with many well respected poets and writers, some Pushcart Prize winners... but none have 'made it' enough to earn them even part-time money. I have written for 30 odd years and had a fair few things published -poetry - not novels or stories- but it will never pay the rent.

I would say your best bet is take the creative writing degree and maybe investigate journalism, you could specialise in equine subjects and combine your interests ? Perhaps you could approach your local paper and ask if they would let you have a week or so experience as you are thinking of doing a creative writing degree?

People working in the creative industries, nowadays especially, will find that they will mostly working for peanuts or for free. (I am an artist and writer and my partner is a musician, so sadly I know the score)

ALL the writers I know have day jobs to pay the bills and work on their novels and poetry in their spare time.
