Herndous, horse found hanging over cliff

:(( there has been far far too many animal cruelty reports in the news lately.. im utterly disgusted and truly upset by each and every single one.. the type of people that commit these acts of cruelty are true evil and i have no words to describe how i feel about them and i just can't understand how they do it.. RIP little pony..

Poor, poor little mite. I hope he became unconscious quickly and didn't suffer too much.

There is an area on the NE coast where ponies are tethered along dunes and cliff edges and I can see this happening there. Sadly the RSPCA did go to visit (some didn't have water or grazing) but said someone attends them so they're fine. I'm sure someone "attended" poor little Frank but it wasn't enough, was it?

There need to be strict rules for tethered animals.

this has happened a few time up here , it is very common for horses to be tethered all along our coast line and sadly its too high for anything to survive a fall from the cliffs
there are also mares with foals at foot tethered right next to sheer drops with the owners calling themselves "responsible owners" i really wish our council would do something about this and put a stop to it , there was a foal born on a tether at the end of sept this year :( it just will not survive the winter and will become one of a handful of cases that just won't make it this year
i'm sick of seeing it all over the place its sickening and no it is not the "community" to blame , it is people who live in the town who think a horse can live on the end of a rope until they fancy a trot around the roads once in a while or ride it through the pub for a laugh :(

I have never seen a tethered horse that doesn't belong to travellers of some sort. Even saw a little mini tethered next to a gypsy site in Thamesmead, SE London of all places on the tiniest patch of grass for miles. Am getting sick and tired of the way some of their horses are treated.

In actual fact, there are also a very very high number of 'respected' horse people who SERIOUSLY neglect their horses too. It just doesn't make the press.

Shilasdair- I personally know the RSPCA Inspector involved in this, and every word is true. She sat with this pony all night with its head in her lap waiting for the vet from Redwings. She then travelled in the back with the pony. The vet involved is extremely experienced and a brilliant man and they did everything to save the ponies life. The inspector is very horsy and was totally devastated. If it wasn't for her attendance and rescue of using the pen knife to cut the tether that pony would have died by suffocation over that cliff.

Agree with you there- I just suppose that that sort of abuse is less blatantly obvious and more hidden away. Not to say that it's any less traumatic.

I wouldn't bother MM - you will get accused of marketing!! Lol!

i'd have a fair guess at 90% of the horses i see tethered every day in my area do not belong to travelers , there is a permanent "site" locally and the horses in that area do belong to them
i am not defending travelers but i do get a little sick of them immediatley getting the blame , the last horse i came across belonging to a traveler was the tidiest, best turned out , most well behaved stallion on a show field
the scum bag bin end dealers horses are tethered all over the place , not wormed or fed or watered or even cared about tbh
as well as like i said earlier ,"town folk" think they can just tie them up and leave them on any spare piece of grass in the area for when they fancy a full pelt trot down the road , there is one particular poor black n white cob who is always hopping lame whenever you see it out and they just swear at you when you point out that they shouldn't be driving it about , they are not travelers either

No offence, but you're pretty new to HHO...
And the pony was left unconscious all night? That's untenable.
I've seen too many ignorant RSPCA inspectors who wouldn't know if a horse was lame or not (maybe they're better with small animals, if I'm being charitable).

I can see why they tried to save the pony - i guess they couldnt possibly have known the extent of the damage So it was worth a try

Poor pony :(

I'm 'wrong' - alrighty then. I note your inability to address the points I raised, and will draw my own conclusions.

And on HHO all we have to judge someone's character are their posts over time.

S :)

P.S. what's 'Herndous'? Is that the place name?

Shilasdair- the only 'point' you raised (sort of) was 'and the pony was left unconscious all night?'. I didn't 'address' because I can't find where in the article it states that pony was unconscious ALL NIGHT. I presumed that you were making assumptions from the article as you had made assumptions about me.

MY point was that in this instance you are quite simply mistaken in your views as I personally know both the inspector and vet involved and was aware of the incident when it happened. Simples.

Oh and are you asking me what herndous means or the actual person who started this thread and typed it? I should image as most people have that it is meant to say horrendous and a mistake was made, as is easily done. Like you say, a person is judged by what they post so I can only take the opinion you by repeatedly pointing out the mistake you were merely trying to be pretentious.

Ah, I didn't get 'horrendous' - was thinking of 'Herne' as part of a place name. Whoops.

And the article says:

In a six-hour rescue, the unconscious pony was rescued from the beach with help from the fire service and taken to the Norfolk-based Redwings Horse Sanctuary for treatment.

It died from a collapsed windpipe on arrival at the charity.

Ms Thorne said: "I was so upset; I kept telling the horse he would be the most famous and looked after horse in Suffolk if he pulled through.

"To lose him after six hours of trying to save him was awful.

Which suggests that they kept him alive but unconscious until he died (without benefit of euthanasia). :(

I can only imagine that 'Frank the Survivor' would have generated more cash than 'Frank who was PTS'. They usually PTS with astonishing alacrity, even healthy animals.

And my second point was that the RSPCA seldom have any equine qualifications either academic or vocational, nor experience.

S :)
