He's arrived!!

After waiting over a year and almost giving up I finally collected my Irish terrier pup yesterday He is totally gorgeous. He travelled 120 miles very happily and was brilliant last night. He is very happy to wee in the garden too. We loooooove him already. He has come from a lovely home and was absolutely worth the wait and doing it the 'right' way. He terribly sweet at the moment but we are waiting for the terrierist in him to emerge....Photos attached. Of course!! Thanks for keeping my spirits up during the long wait HHO.

Thank you His name at this point is Red, as in little Red Dog!! He does have a posh name but is likely to remain Red. I am now minorly obsessed with all things house training and puppy food...He came equipped with a large sack of Royal Canin Puppy but I feed my older dog on a much higher meat/better rated food so waiting gently for a while before I introduce the puppy version of that. I had completley forgotten what puppies were like - I now have to do things 5 minutes at a time!!

Parrotperson: they vary a bit - the breed standard says 'to the knee' but not to whose knee that is...!! His mum is sort of springer spaniel size (not a huge spaniel). They are a lovely, very very old fashioned breed, designed to be an Irish small holder/farmers dog to do a bit of everything and known for their loyalty (not their obedience!!). They are on the list of vulnerable breeds so I am delighted to have been able to acquire a lovely healthy, well bred one. We have had a fab day today. No accidents in the house at all again today (other than 1 poo overnight). I haven't quite worked out when he needs to go out in the night yet but he is very happy to go and have a wee in the garden and will 'go pee' almost on the suggestion but it is very early days yet. Poor chap is completely flaked out this evening: I think we have let him follow us about in the field too much though he has been happy and energetic all day. I hope I can wake him up for tea!! My old dog has also started to think that he might just about be tolerable which is lovely: she is very, very dear to us and I have not enjoyed seeing her look so put out, even though she has had many, many fancy treats in compensation!! Pics from today. I will try to take it a bit easier on him tomorrow - eek!

Yes, Red will be his name: it is the only name the whole family didn't fall out over!! I quite liked 'Irish' or 'Mick' though that could cause offence and I would not wish to do that one bit. He has been really quick to learn about weeing and pooing outside and apart from one poo today when I just took too long getting dressed we haven't had any accidents since day 1. I just love him, as do the rest of the family. I know that he will may grow into a wilful, demonic terrier but just now he is very, very sweet My son cannot wait for him to start misbehaving and getting all 'terriery'!

Oh wow! That just doesn't bear thinking about...I hardly know anyone else with an Irish and had to travel some way to find mine so I have only had chance to meet 2 litters of puppies (all sold in the first litter and Red's brothers and sisters in the second), some rather bored ones at shows and very, very occasionally I might meet one somewhere random. I know they can be 'challenging' but although I will work hard at essential training my general obedience requirements are thankfully quite limited. Probably a good thing...

So the terrierist has emerged!! But now he is a tired tiny terrier and needs to gather strength for his next assault on the garden....my old dog and he are so funny together: she is so cool headed and gentle whilst he is so small and furious! I had to use a water squirt today to preserve our bantams dignity. It has begun.
