He's got lice :(

Could do with some recommendations on the best way to get rid of lice. Turned
up to bens stable and he seemd very itchy - he's ripped his stable rug over night because of it and he's normally very quiet in the stable. After further examination I found a number of small brown lice in his coat and he's now going nutty itching :/

I'm pretty vigilant and they seem to have arrived very quickly, what are your recommendations for getting rid of them??

He is only a yearling so don't want to clip and with the weather as it is, don't really want to bath in Insecticidal shampoo either :/ I've heard the powders aren't very effective.....thoughts anyone??

You can get an injection from the vet. Not expensive and cleared my friends mares lice really quickly. Think you need to have second a few weeks later to get the lice that hadn't hatched when the first jab was given. Much easier than bathing and powders. xx

Coopers Fly Repellant gets rid of lice or Diosect, the powders are to help prevent and will not kill live lice.

The injection is hit and miss. It won't clear a bad infestation.
First clip.....its the best way to get rid of the little buggers.
Then use coopers. Use once a week for at LEAST 4 weeks, changing the rug each time you use it so avoid reinfestation.
That should pretty much do it.

buy some frontline, the one you get for dogs with the pipettes in? Buy a large dog pack, clip a small patch on the whither and put the front line on the area, on the skin. Works a treat.
Also bath with some dermoline shampoo, and finally a clean rug with some louse powder on his coat.

My mare came back from stud crawling in them!!! We did the above and they had gone in a couple of days

We treated our little mare who came to us infested with lice just with powder as she has such sensitive skin - worked after a week or so of applying it every day. Would also recommend deosect which I use as a fly repellent but it does lice too.

Switch is good for getting rid of lice and is easy to use. You just apply it to the mane and tail.

"Flypor" or "permethrin" it is a cattle pour on, but it is given to us by the equine vet to get rid of lice.

it needs to be poured on from behind the ears, to the top of the tail along the spine. use half of the dose on the crest (part the mane and get right onto the skin, the other half along the spine.

wear gloves when you apply. Do it on a dry day/while stabled and leave rugs off. repeat in 2 weeks, no more lice.

Warning: do not use spot on, as it has been known to burn some horses skin.
