ok so i can catch my boy fine and can get half way across the field !!!
but then he stops and thats it !! i can get him to do a few steps forward then stops again but then eventually get down to the gate !!
but today he stopped and i couldnt budge him i was stood up there for 20 mins hoping he would get bored i even caught one of the other horse and brought down hoping he would follow !! i had to give up in the end as i had promised to take my son to the pictures !!!

i know hes testing me but any ideas ???

My Charlie used to do this to me. I know how frustrating it is. I tried everything to get any forward or sideways movement. I resorted to taking a schooling whip in to the field. I found that regular tickles on the bum, resorted in forward movement and eventually solved the problem.

Turn him round and back him all the way to the gate if he stops at all. You can also swing him round in circles, one way and then the other til he's giddy (you stand still virtually so you don't!)

yep its very frustrating, soon as hes out of the gate hes fine i think its just because he doesnt want to leave his new friends but he cant keep on doing it !!

once we get to the top of the field its then down hill to the gate !!
trouble is hes an old man now so cant do lots of turns as hes got a bit of athritis so it takes him big turns as hes also a big boy !!
he should know better lol !!!

I had a very similar problem and solved it using a dually halter. Whatever method you end up using to get him moving it needs to persuade him that its worse to stand still than it is to carry on

souds about rite cos when we were stood there today he was falling asleep !!!
little bugger, like you say make it easier for him to be walking than standing,i will be trying options in the morn as we have farrier coming out so he needs to be in !!!!

My boy went through a phase of this- he has never been any bother to catch and get a headcollar on (puts his nose into it!) but would plant himself on the way to the gate- a couple of weeks ago I thought, fine! Sod you- flung the lead rope over his shoulders and walked to the gate without him. He stood there for a minute trying to figure out this silly human, then realised he was being left behind... and came flying up past me, stood at the gate, as if to say "well, what are you dawdling for? Places to go, people to see!" and since then, all I do is put his head collar on and he heads up to the gate under his own steam. I figured he was trying to tell me- "I'm a grown up- I can do it all by myself!"
