Hello,

Just wondering if any one has recently upgraded their post-97 license to enable them to drive a 7.5t box? I'm after suggestions on where to do a course/test in the Yorkshire area? From my research so far, I see that prices can vary wildly. Any advice?

Also, for recent students, how did you find it? Did you do a set number of days, taking a test at the end??

All suggestions/info welcomed!!

xx

Hi there im 22 and i took my C1 Non HGV (7.5t)test when i was 18, i had to have a medical £100, Theory (crnt quite remember how much that was) and then i did three days in peterborough as it was the only place at the time with a 7.5t lorry to use, i had 4 hrs the first day 4hrs the next 2hrs and test on third day and passed much to my teachers suprise as he said most people have a minimum of 5 days and then test, that they only take a 3 day refresher course when they had failed!
I then as soon as i turned 21 took my C2 HGV test (you can now do HGV at 18 as they have changed the laws) i didnt need another medical and theory as i already had that!
I had only 8 hrs training for this, You have a split gear box to get used too, 1,2,3,4 low, 5,6,7,8 High, off road manovres which consists of reverse into allocated bay, emergancy stop, on route you do a uphill start, downhill start, gear change etc, depends what experience you have had lorry driving to be fair? if you can get some practise before hand it helps! xx

I cant help on the yorkshire area.... but when I did my HGV 2 years ago (pasted driving test at 17 in 98!) I went to a very well known instructor in my area and did 3 full days of training and the test on the 4th day, think with the cost of everything from medical, theory, provisional license, training and test it came to about £1000.Hope this helps in some way? x

My sister just did hers last week with Tockwith Training. They are the only ones I know in Yorkshire (but then that's probably cos they are nearby!). Tockwith is near the Wetherby/York area in case you're not from that part of Yorkshire.

ive just done my HGV test with a company in bradford who were v good. If you want more details PM me. Did my medical at dr's for £95, then theory, then the practical by a 3day intensive course.
If you want the info of who i did it with PM me
Cx

Thanks for the advice!

I have made some enquries with Tockwith but they have been a bit rubbish getting back to me.

Does anyone know anything about the provisional license? I have a friend's lorry that I can practice in. Or is the practical course with a training provder enough?

the more practice you get the better even just manuvering about and reversing on private land will help you get used to and more confident handling a bigger vehicle. I think you need a driver who has taken the test and has passed to be able to supervise a learner not just a pre 97 licence that gives grandfather rights to drive a 7.5 ton if you want to go on the road ....a very good thing to practice is reversing useing your side mirrors you can do this in your car ...

I did a three/four day course for my c1 license with the test on the last day.

The company I found did it in a 5 tonne van so it was great to drive.

Luckily I passed first time, although I don't know how as the examiner was awful!

The course cost me just over £700 including the test. The medical was £120 from the doctors beforehand.

Doing my hgv would have been more, at least 1k I reckon!

I'm glad I did it as it has helped me with driving the box confidently. Although its really a money making scheme for the government!
