I am thinking (perhaps daydreaming is a better word) of looking into getting an upgrade to my driver's licence so I can drive something bigger than a 3.5t. Not because I want to drive a lorry, but more a 4.5t horsebox. Has anyone gone through this recently? How many lessons did you need at what cost per lesson (I know the number is subjective)? How many times did you take the test before you passed? TIA

It's more than just a test.
There are 3 theory tests before you can start learning. It's a few years since I did mine but you have a hazard perception, an hgv theory then another one where you are given situations and questioned on them. You'll need a medical too.
Block courses are quite common , I did my class one and it was About £2500.

I did it with Tilston training in Wrexham and they were excellent.

They gave me a couple of months to self study for the theory and hazard tests which I worked hard with.

Then had a couple of hours of learning the on the ground theory stuff and reversing. Did the reversing certificate on their facility. Went out driving for two sessions after that. Had video feedback (and lunch) in between.

Had another lesson the day of my test and then my test which I passed.

I think the whole package including medical was about £500 or so. Tilston have a very high pass rate.

I did C1 and didn't go for full HGV. Everyone kept saying just go for the full licence but I have no intention of ever driving ing anything bigger so I was happy with C1 (7.5t, rigid body)

I did it over a week, an intensive course. Passed first time!! It was a long time ago though but would recommend the intensive course as it gets it done and you are very well prepared for it.

I did it last year with a local company (2start, south central). I got them to organise absolutely everything so total cost was £1200 but could do it cheaper.
- they booked the medical and sent me the paperwork.
- I then sent off medical forms and got the provisional licence
- they then booked the theory tests (hgv theory and hazard perception) and sent me all the revision materials and practice tests
- once I had passed that I booked into the intensive driving course.
- 3.5 hrs driving a day for four days.
- reversing test on day two (takes 10min)
- driving test on day 4.

Took me three months in total to get it all done, but I had to work around work as couldn't get time off.

3 days intensive course with reversing test on day 2 and road test on day 3. Was about £1200 and the company organised the medical and theory test bookings and materials. Would highly recommend them if you’re in/ around Leicester?!
