He is amazing only a baby though and I am teaching him to accept the bit and get a lovelier outline. Any tips please? What have you done that has worked???
He was great last night with just old fashioned hard work and a LOT of leg!!! He is soooooo sweet I will get pics up super soon.

Stick to what your doing, hard work and leg, why rush things or resort to training gadgets unless your horse really needs them due to other problems etc, you said yourself he was great.

Yeah, agree. Lots of work, make it fun and interesting and don't go down the gadget route (you'll just have to come off them eventually). I find lots of up and down transitions help to keep mine's attention, so they never know what is coming next and have to really listen to you. Keeps them light also.
Also, trotting poles when he's ready?

Yep totally agree, lots of transitions, so he comes light in your hand but responsive from your leg, riding a quarter of a circle in a sitting trot (slow the trot down) then push on into a working trot for half (rising) and back into sitting is a great exercise, so he learns adjust his paces and not work on the forehand.

Take your time to warm up which is vital, walking on long rein to allow him to stretch his neck down ...further the better and shorten up gradually not straight from long to short.

Riding squares, half halts when turning your imaginary corners, so your horse is thinking about what he's doing with all 4 legs while taking notice of yours, lots of serps, bending him round your legs, little gentle squeezes with your inside rein but don't make the mistake of giving your outside one away, again very gradually, its all about encouragement not force.

You will find as your horse gets fitter (and you) that he will be able maintain an outline for longer periods, but again do it gradually while he learns to adjust and use the different muscles.....and most important enjoy, its easy to turn them sour with too much schooling if your horse is young.

Again, take the same time to cool of and let him stretch.
