Formerly known as Jordan, Katie Price is a model and TV star whose love of horses has led to her publishing a series of pony novels
I first became obsessed with horses at the age of six when the borrowed 12hh grey pony I was having lessons on would bomb off with me each time we hacked out. I was hooked.
My mum didnt have much money so, for the next few years, I only rode ponies borrowed from friends or on loan.
Being ditched is what gave me my confidence. As the old saying goes: You have to fall off seven times before you can call yourself a rider. I took advice like that seriously.
My great love at the time was childrens pony books such as Ruby Fergusons Jills Gymkhana.
Now Im fortunate enough to be able to release my own pony books. The stories Ive created are just the kind of thing I loved to read when I was girl.
After my experiences with the grey pony, I told my mum that I would like to have lessons at a riding school and I started going to the stables every Saturday.
At nine years old I took a 14.2hh New
Forest pony called Star on loan. He lived in a field up the road and he was perfect for a
child of that age.
I was inspired by stories about girls who cared for their ponies on a shoestring these girls were sometimes looked down on by others who had better horses and more money. The books often had a heroine finding a horse in a field that noone else could go near. Shed win his trust until they ultimately beat everyone else at the local show.
I used to compete at local gymkhanas and a friend and I would scrape together the money to pay for a hired horsebox. It was so decrepit we were never sure if it would make it to the show.
My pony stories are set in a riding school run by Vicki. The yard is neat and tidy but also fun and welcoming. Vickis passion for horses has led her to leave her job and plough every penny of her savings into the stables.
Five of the seven ponies in the yard have been loaned to individual stable girls to look after. Any of the girls who show promise and work hard around the yard get back a hundred-fold from Vicki. These girls and their ponies are the focus of my stories.
My inspiration comes from so much of what I did as a kid. I look back fondly on bringing the ponies in from the field with just a headcollar and cantering them bareback up to the yard. But I wouldnt do that now, and Im aware that there are many more regulations at riding schools these days.
Throughout my teenage years, I used to dream that my mum would buy me a horse. Every Christmas I would think: Maybe this time
At 14 years old I started looking for a horse around 16hh. When I told people my age it would put them off but when I got on they said: Oh, you can ride.
Finally on my 15th birthday, my mum bought me a horse. He was a bay ex-racehorse and she paid £500 for him.
I didnt know much about ex-racehorses, but I saw him in the field and thought: Wow what a nice-looking Thoroughbred.
He was called Star and had no neigh; hed had an operation on his larynx.
Seeing him in the field that day was about the only good time I had with him because he had really bad tendons and had been pin-fired. He spent more time in the stable on bute than we did out riding.
I always warn people thinking of buying an ex-racehorse to be very careful.
Horses are a hobby I just cant drop. I bought my first horse when I was 18 and have bought and sold several in the past 10 years; always trading up for homes with more land and stables. I currently own six horses and Im looking for more.
In my younger days, the media gave the impression that I was out partying all the time. But, in fact, I was still doing my horses and riding every day.
I do all my own yard work, including the mucking out I manage to fit it around my career, husband and kids. When I was younger I wouldnt even find time to go to the gym.
I still go out and do my job but I cherish coming home, chilling out and doing the horses. I love the smell of them, everything even
poo-picking the fields.
I enjoy flicking through horse catalogues like Robinsons and going to tack shops and the feed merchants. I cant believe the price of a bale of hay these days. It was 50p when I was a kid and now its nearer £5.
Im better at mucking out straw than shavings, but its almost as expensive to bed on straw now. I was looking for a way to save some time, so I had rubber matting put in the stables and add big straw banks. It does save time, but lifting them to clean them every month is a killer!
When I muck out, Peter [Andre, Katies popstar husband] says: God, you make it look so easy. But I love mucking out, making up the feeds, everything.
Pete thinks horses are beautiful and before he got ill [he is recovering from a meningitis-like virus that struck him down a month ago] he had been having riding lessons.
It would be so nice if he had a horse too, and we could go hacking together. But like the mucking out, he says I make riding look easy. Hell be fine once hes got his balance right. Im looking for a safe horse for him but finding one like that isnt easy and I dont want Pete to be put off.
Our son, Junior, whos two, is absolutely obsessed with our Shetland, Rosie. He likes climbing on to her and tries to copy me brushing her. But these Shetlands can be bloody naughty, too. My other son, Harvey isnt very interested.
Ive always read Horse & Hound every week and bought a couple of my horses and my lorry from it. I asked the lorry man if he had a pink lorry and he customised one for me all pink with hearts all over it.
Ive got plans to launch my own horse range pink and very bling with everything matching. I hope people will like it as much as me.
My novels are aimed at girls aged between seven and nine and I dont think they are too sophisticated for pony books. Lots of girls of that age come to my book signings, so hopefully they will enjoy the novels. Ive also got a pony care book coming out in the autumn.
A couple of my horses are on loan to other riders and compete in show jumping and eventing. Although I havent got the time to compete, I
want to take up dressage and Im looking for the right horse and a
good trainer in my area.
I never really learnt dressage as a child but I think the controlled power looks beautiful. I doubt I would ever get to a really high standard but, just like in my career, I like to be the best in anything I take on. You never know until you try.
I wish there was more show jumping and other horse sports on TV like there used to be. Why is it just hours and hours of football and cricket?
Sadly, I dont know anyone else in showbiz who has
horses. They always say they enjoy looking at them, but thats it.
All I want to do is invite somebody
down to my house to come out and ride with me. H&H
